2006 Ironstone Symphony 'Obsession' Sierra Foothills
$ 6.99Snobs who think grapes like Symphony, which were born in American agricultural schools, will never rise to the aristocracy of European varietals should give this one a listen - and a place in the fridge. It's a light, refreshing charmer, with a bouquet of flowers and fruit even when it's crisp and cold. Yet the ripe taste is only a little sweet, with the tartness of fresh pineapple or apricot and a lush mouthfeel. It's a gewurztraminer that Yankees can pronounce. Try it with anything spicy; you may wind up making it your house wine, at least for the summer. Symphony's chief advocate is Ironstone Vineyards in the Sierra foothills, run by the clever folks who make a pioneering cabernet franc and the Lodi-proud Leaping Horse bargains. They've made Symphony their Obsession for years. If pedigree matters, Symphony was bred 50 years ago at the University of California at Davis from Rhone parents: perfumed muscat of Alexandria and fleshy grenache gris. Maybe not nobles, but probably more fun.
