2005 Villacreces Nebro (Ribera del Duero)
$ 189.99The 2005 Tinto is 86% Tempranillo, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 4% Merlot which went through malolactic fermentation in barrel and remained in French oak for another 16 months. Purple-colored, the aromatics reveal notes of mocha, coffee, smoke, violets, spice box, wild cherry, and blackberry. Smooth-textured, layered, and well-balanced, this superb effort will continue to evolve for several years and drink well through 2025. 98 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate #175 (FEB 2008)
The 2003 Les Pavots (61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Cabernet Franc, 13% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot) exhibits notes of melted licorice, tapenade, damp earth, black currants, and cedar. Slightly more herbaceous than the 2004, with notions of barbecued meat as well as blue and black fruits, this full-bodied, dense 2003 may not have quite the potential of the 2002 or 2001, but it is a brilliant effort to consume between 2008-2020. Tannic and closed to the point of inaccessibility, this Cab-based blend, which contains Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot, comes from low-yielding vines grown 1,700 feet above Knights Valley. It all comes down to a question of ageability. The answer is it will age quite nicely. The balance is superb, and the core of fruit is there. Do not open this wine until 2010; it should continue to develop for another 10 years at least. 750ml
Montevetrano Colli di Salerno Rosso 2005
$ 195.99Very ripe and raisiny, with tar and licorice character that turns to volcanic ash and dried flowers. Full and chewy, yet balanced and polished, with a solid core of fruit and a long, subtle, flavored finish. Best after 2009. Imparato's 2005 Montevetrano is a medium-bodied, somewhat slender version of this wine. It offers a compelling array of crushed flowers, spices, graphite, cracked pepper and jammy blackberries. Today it comes across as less complex than the 2004, but it still very tightly wound and may merit a higher score in the future. Montevetrano is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 10% Aglianico. 750ml
Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Ornellaia 2006
$ 195.99The 2006 Ornellaia flows from the glass in a profound expression of ripe, dark fruit. With time in the glass layers of minerals, cassis, tar, sweet herbs and French oak emerge, adding further complexity. This harmonious Ornellaia combines the richness of the vintage with superb freshness and awesome balance. Today the wine’s sheer density almost manages to hide the tannins, but they are there, and the wine will ultimately benefit from a few years in the cellar. The 2006 Ornellaia is one of the highlights of this sensational Tuscan vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026. Dark in color, showing loads of dark fruits on the nose, as well as licorice and berries and hints of mint and cedar. Full-bodied, with refined yet chewy tannins and a ripe berry, coffee and chocolate aftertaste. New wood barrels shine through. But it will all come together with bottle age. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best after 2012. 750ml
1997 Lewis Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve
$ 199.00Lewis cellars was established in 1992 by Debbie and Randy Lewis, and later joined by their son Dennis. This small family winery produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Syrah and Merlot. They incorporate hands-on management and take it to a literal extent as they walk the rows during every developmental stage. Oakville, Rutherford and Pritchard Hill are the sources from which they obtain the finest fruit for red varietals, and the Carneros and Russian River Valley appellations source their Chardonnay. The wines produced here combine balanced vines with modest yields to produce the maximum flavors. Their world-class wines are rich, balanced and complex.
2005 Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou (St Julien)
$ 199.99"The 2005 Ducru Beaucaillou is a 10,000-case blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot (they used to produce 18,000-20,000 cases). It is an exceptionally powerful wine with a dense purple color, superb intensity, and a beautiful, sweet nose of spring flowers, raspberries, blueberries, graphite, and creme de cassis. Full-bodied with fabulous concentration, exceptionally high tannin, good acidity, and massive layers of richness that build incrementally on the palate, this monumental effort is more structured than their outstanding 2003. It may be the finest wine produced at this estate since the 1982 and 1961 Ducrus. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2050." 97 points- The Wine Advocate, Issue 176 (Apr 2008) "Aromas of blackberry, currant and toasty oak, with a hint of spice, lead to a full-bodied palate, with plenty of blackberry, chocolate and Indian spices. Balanced, refined and very pretty, with a velvety texture and a long, beautifully textured finish. Best after 2013." 95 points - Wine Spectator, March 31, 2008 "(contains a relatively high percentage of merlot, in the range of 30%) Good deep ruby-red. Wonderfully sweet, aromatic nose combines currant, chocolate and cedary oak. Fat, lush and silky, with atypical volume to the flavors of plum, tobacco and chocolate. Wonderfully supple, plump wine with layers of flavor, thoroughly sweet tannins and compelling aromatic persistence. Today the wine's substantial baby fat is masking its impressive underlying power. According to Borie, this 2005 combines the best traits of the chateau's 2003 and 2000." 94 points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, May/Jun 08
Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande Pauillac 2003
$ 199.99The brilliant, opulent, fleshy 2003 Pichon Lalande (65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot) possesses a high pH of 3.8 as well as 13% alcohol. Reminiscent of the 1982 Pichon Lalande (which never shut down and continues to go from strength to strength), the dense plum/purple-colored 2003 offers gorgeous aromas of blackberries, plum liqueur, sweet cherries, smoke, and melted licorice. Fleshy, full-bodied, and intense, displaying a seamless integration of wood, acidity, tannin, and alcohol, this beauty can be drunk now or cellared for 20 years or more. Normally one of the most elegant of Pauillacs, the 2003 is big and dense. These dark tannins mask delicious black fruit, flavors of spice and layers of acidity. This is going to develop relatively fast, despite the density of the wine, just because it is so rich. Very pretty aromas of plum, blackberry, chocolate, espresso and cherry follow through to a full-bodied palate, with ultrasilky tannins, refined fruit and a long, caressing finish. This is fine and refined with a wonderful texture. Not quite the 2000, but excellent. Best after 2011. 18,330 cases made. 750ml
