Sassicaia is a rare and wonderful twist on the traditional Tuscan and Piedmont varieties, which concentrate on Italian grape varieties, namely Sangiovese and Nebbiolo. Sassicaia added French to varieties to enhance its character towards that of an “International†Cabernet Sauvignon taste. This is a classic . Bolgheri Sassicaia D.O.C. is situated just South of Livorno, Tuscany, and the Sassicia is produced at the Tenuta San Guido estate. Marchesi Incisa della Rocchetta originally owned the estate, and has since been managed by his son, Niccolo. Sassicaia, translated in Italian as “the place of many stones,†is the proprietary name for the estate’s Bordeaux-style blend. This premium blend uses Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Sassicaia vineyard originally had vines that were planted with cuttings from the esteemed Chateau Lafite Rothschild. Sassicaia is considered the most elegant and well-balanced of all the Super-Tuscan wines.

Barbaresco is a powerful Italian wine made with the Nebbiolo grape. Barbaresco is produced in the Piedmont region in an area of the Langhe immediately to the east of Alba and specifically in the communes of Barbaresco, Treiso and Neive plus that area of the frazione San Rocco Senodelvio which was once part of the commune of Barbaresco and now belongs to the commune of Alba. It was granted Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC) status in 1966 and Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita status 1980. The wine is often compared with Barolo-another Nebbiolo based wine from the Piedmont area. Though the wines do share many similarities, there are some distinct differences between them. Owned and operated by four generations of the Gaja family, the winery began with Giovanni Gaja in 1859. Since the 1960s, Angelo Gaja has been running the operation and is credited with modernizing the wine. The first property of forty acres of vineyards is dedicated to two Brunello di Montalcino wines called Sugarille and Rennina. Gaja acquired a second property in 1996, with 200 acres, 150 of which are devoted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. Currently, Piedmont is home to 250 acres of vineyards owned by the Gaja Winery. The wines are profound and display a style that is unrivaled elsewhere in Italy.
