  1. Avalon 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon

    $ 9.98

    For the second straight year Avalon’s Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has taken top honors at our under $15 Cabernet Shootout. The 2007 Avalon Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon was up against nine other top-selling Cabernet-based wines from California (’07 Snap Dragon Cab, ’07 Cannonball Cab, ’07 Foxglove Cab) Chile (’07 Koyle Cab), Argentina (’08 Cuevas de las Manos Cab ’08 Maipe Cab), Australia (’08 Darby & Joan Cab, ’06 Kangarilla Road Cab) and France (’07 La Forge Cab), all exceptional value red wines. In the end it was no contest as Avalon was chosen the best tasting wine by 29 of the 35 tasters in attendance. No wonder it is our best selling wine! We think you should experience this top-notch Napa Cab for yourself, so for a limited time you can save an additional dollar off (Was $10.98, Now $9.98) this already well-priced Cabernet. Tasting Note: With its deep crimson color the 2007 Avalon Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits aromas of raspberry, blackberry, mint and black cherries. Vanilla and short bread cookie notes bring balance and frame the ripe berry flavors. Small barrel oak aging gives the wine additional breadth and weight on the palate. Napa Valley characteristics show through with strawberries, red raspberries and a faint root beer note with quintessential Oakville dark cherries. The tannins are fine and give off a velvety texture. Supple, elegant and richly flavored, this is classic Napa Valley Cabernet at a price we can all live with. That is why it is our best selling wine and why you should try it if you haven’t already. Come and get it. Robert Parker is a huge fan of this value Cabernet as well and wrote: As one might expect, the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa is a slightly deeper wine [than the California bottling] displaying a more saturated ruby/purple color in addition to sweet creme de cassis, smoked herb, loamy soil, cedar, and spice characteristics. It should drink well for 3-4 years. I enjoyed Avalon’s 2006 efforts, and in 2007 (a brilliant vintage throughout California for nearly every varietal) they have again turned in strong performances. 88 Points - "a very, very good wine!" 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petite Syrah.

  2. Whitehall Lane 2005 Pinot Noir Carneros

    $ 12.98

    This is a solid Pinot Noir from a top-notch Napa Valley winery. Known mostly for their Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, this is a varietal that Whitehall Lane had great success with in the 2005. About the vintage: The 2005 growing season in Carneros started with cool, wet weather, followed by mild summer months. With ample moisture in the soil and warm days, the Pinot Noir ripened slowly and evenly. The grapes were harvested from the Las Brisas Vineyard and the Sangiacomo Vineyard in the middle of September when the fruit displayed ideal balance and juicy, ripe flavors. Tasting note: The 2005 Whitehall Lane Carneros Pinot Noir is beautifully balanced, displaying aromas and flavors of ripe cherry, strawberry, clove and toasty oak. It is supple, clean and smooth on the mid-palate with a savory crème brulee finish. Enjoyable now and for several years to come. This is a solid bottle of Pinot Noir!

  3. 2008 Mathilde du Chateau La Fleur Morange (Saint-Emilion)

    $ 19.99

    This wine merits serious attention. The 2008 La Fleur Morange Mathilde is the earlier-bottled, more fruit driven of the two cuvées. It offers exuberant sweet cassis and black cherry fruit, loads of body, and supple tannins. A seductive, sexy, fruity, 100% Merlot, it is an unpretentious St.-Emilion that will seduce the senses and provide enormous pleasure over the next 4-5 years. 89 Points, Robert Parkers' Wine Advocate, Issue# 182. The term wine future refers to buying wine shortly after it is made at the winery, but before it is bottled and shipped. 4. 2004 O. Fournier B Crux Uco Valley

    $ 19.99

    "The 2004 B Crux is a blend of 50% Tempranillo, 40% Malbec, and 10% Merlot aged for 12 months in 50% new French and American oak. Dark ruby-colored, it reveals a fragrant bouquet of cedar, violets, blackberry, black raspberry and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, on the palate it has layers of savory fruit, cinnamon, and chocolate, good balance, excellent concentration, and a lengthy, fruit-filled finish. It will evolve for 2-3 years and drink well through 2018." 91 points - Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate, Issue 180 "Nicely focused, with velvety-textured black cherry, currant, vanilla and toast notes that glide along supple tannins. Shows a raisined hint on the finish, but it's not heavy or dull, with plenty of length and balance. Tempranillo, Malbec and Merlot. Drink now through 2009. 1,000 cases imported." 90 points - Wine Spectator, February 29, 2008 "Bright ruby-red. Superripe aromas of blackberry, licorice and bitter chocolate, complemented by sexy oak spices. Highly concentrated flavors of dark berries, bitter chocolate and spices show surprising cut and verve. Finishes with substantial broad, fine-grained tannins." 89 points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Jan/Feb 08 "In Mendoza, at an elevation of 3,600 feet the exceptional appellations of La Consulta, Pareditas and El Cepillo are found in the Uco Valley. The days are hot and the nights cool. Soaking up the Argentine sun and fresh mountainous air these supple grapes ripen to reveal power and brightness. This organic unfiltered blend is made from hand harvested (50%) Tempranillo, (40%) Malbec and, (10%) Merlot. It is fermented in stainless steel tanks for 6 days, and then undergoes malolactic fermentation in oak barrels. The wine is aged for 12 months in oak. 80% of which was French and 20% American; 50% is new oak and 50% is second used barrels. On the nose you will experience oak, blackberry jelly, licorice and some mint. On the palate, warm black currants, tangy plum, spice and licorice notes coat the mouth. B “Beta” Crux is solid, rich, vibrant, and concludes with a lively balanced finish. I recommend decanting to soften its firm tannins and pairing with authentic chorizo or spiced meat. Muy excelente! 91points SS

  6. 2008 Le Croix de Gay (Pomerol) »FUTURES«

    $ 23.99

    The finest wine I have tasted from this estate over recent years, La Croix de Gay's 2008 exhibits superb fruit density, a deep ruby/purple color, and significant concentration. Yields were 35 hectoliters per hectare, and the blend is 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. Made by Chantal Lebreton and Alain Raynaud, it should drink nicely for 15+ years. 89-91 Points, Robert Parkers' Wine Advocate, Issue#182 The term wine future refers to buying wine shortly after it is made at the winery, but before it is bottled and shipped. 7. 2005 Bouscat 'Cuvee la Gargone' (Bordeaux Superieur)

    $ 24.99

    "While I was not impressed with Bouscat’s regular 2005 offering, these two cuvees were both super. The 2005 Cuvee Gargone (a blend of 60% Merlot, 20% Malbec, and the rest Cabernet Franc and a dollop of Cabernet Sauvignon) offers a deep ruby/purple hue accompanied by aromas of crushed rocks, tobacco leaves, black currants, cherries, and spice. The wine possesses serious concentration, beautiful density, a lovely texture, and a long, pure finish. Not surprisingly, Claude Gros is the consultant at this estate. Sadly, there are only 600 cases of this offering. It should drink well for 3-5 years." 89 points - The Wine Advocate, Issue 176

  8. 2008 Chateau La Fleur de Bouard (Lalande de Pomerol) »FUTURES«

    $ 26.99

    The 2008 La Fleur de Bouard was cropped at 25 hectoliters per hectare, and the final blend is 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine came in at 13% natural alcohol. Its dense purple color is accompanied by a big, sweet nose of white chocolate, creme de cassis, licorice, tar, and toast. A lively, crisp acid profile is due to the lack of serious heat in 2008. Textured and long, it is capable of lasting a decade or more. This is a sleeper of the vintage. 90-93 Points, Robert Parkers' Wine Advocate, Issue#182 The term wine future refers to buying wine shortly after it is made at the winery, but before it is bottled and shipped. Buying wine futures allows you to lock in a significantly discounted price relative to what the wine will sell for on general release. 9. 2008 La Croix de Beaucaillou (Saint-Julien) »FUTURES«

    $ 27.99

    A second wine has improved immensely under the administration of Bruno Borie, and the 2008 Croix de Beaucaillou is a sensual effort displaying sweet tannins, copious quantities of black currant and blueberry fruit, medium to full body, and a long finish with no hard edges. A blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot, it should drink beautifully for 15 or more years. Bruno Borie deserves accolades for the remarkable things he has accomplished at Ducru Beaucaillou over the last few years. 89-91 Points, Robert Parkers' Wine Advocate, Issue#182 The term wine future refers to buying wine shortly after it is made at the winery, but before it is bottled and shipped. 10. 2004 Albertina Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon

    $ 28.95

    Only 450 cases of this rare, full-bodied 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon from Mendocino County, California were bottled. This has a beautiful, dense, ruby/purple color, a luscious nose of black fruits intermixed with crushed rocks, sweet jammy strawberries and chocolate, with a long finish. The wine has subtle hints of oak, chewy in the mouth, and lots of youth in its long finish. This wine is approachable now, but should drink well for 5-7+ years. Greg Grazianois (formerly of La Crema) one of the more talented winemakers in California, teamed up with Fred Zamarly on this outstanding effort. Albertina’s grapes came from the famous Waddington ranch which produces intense flavors. Aged in French, American and Hungarian oak for 20 months, the vintage was then bottle aged an additional 18 months. Albertina Wine Cellars is a boutique winery that specializes in ultra-premium Cabernet Sauvignon produced from mountain grapes. Fred and Alberta Zmarzly plant 17 acres of their 418 acre ranch mostly with Cabernet Sauvignon vines; Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot balance the vines. Located on the north side of the mountain slope, the vineyard offers a unique terroir and microclimate that produce intense flavors and colors. The fruit-forward wines produced here offer berry flavors and are very drinkable, having been bottle-aged before release; however, the wine will continue to improve in the bottle for many years. Waddington Ranch Vineyards produces very good fruit and is the source of the 2003 and 2004 bottlings. Located in the hills east of Hopland, Waddington offers intense fruits with berry flavors.
