The 2008 Botani is 100% Moscatel de Alejandria fermented 70% in stainless steel and 30% in French oak. Medium straw-colored, it has an alluring perfume of spring flowers, honey, spice box, and tropical fruits. Smooth-textured, ripe, dry, and mouth-filling, this expressive effort is an excellent match for sushi and Thai food. 90 Points, Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate # 183, Jun 2009 (100% moscatel) Pale chartreuse color. Highly perfumed bouquet of dried peach, melon, orange and anise, with a suave herbal quality. Becomes more floral with air, picking up a sweet honeysuckle quality that carries onto the palate, joining pit fruit and melon flavors. This spicy, graceful wine will be a great performer at the table. 90 Points, Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Sep/Oct 09 Its summertime (my favorite time of the year coincidentally), and Ive been on the prowl to find a delicious crisp white wine to drink. Last month I decided to try the 2008 Bodegas Botani, a 100% dry Moscatel from Malaga, Spain. Ive had the 2007 before which has nice 90 point reviews from both Parker and Tanzer, and I loved it. So, the 2008 arrived and I figured Id give it a shot even without any press. Wow, Im glad I did! What a great white wine! Perfect for picnicking, as it smells like an exotic bouquet of wild flowers. It is very fresh, rich and fruity with notes of citrus. Its similar to Torrontes with a little less acidity. To top it off, its completely hand harvested and organic, not to mention a wine from Jorge Ordonez (which pretty much guarantees its greatness). I say GO GREEN and try the Botani. 90 Points, Summer Martin, Staff Selection, July 2009
Calera Central Coast Chardonnay 2008
$ 19.99Other top values from the iconic Calera winery include Calera’s least expensive Chardonnay, the 2008 Central Coast, which comes from an assortment of vineyards in Monterey, Santa Clara, and San Benito counties. This cuvee is put through 100% malolactic, and is aged in 10% new French oak for ten months. It offers abundant notes of honeysuckle, orange marmalade, white currants, and tropical fruits. Crisp, elegant, mid-weight, and revealing no evidence of its wood aging, it will provide plenty of pleasure over the next 1-2 years. 750ml
Intensely flavored berries with a blacker aromatic character than the traditional ripe red fruit personality of the same varietal grown in Oakville. My tasting notes include terms like black tea, coffee, soy, steak sauce and tar; these in handsome combination with concentrated sweet red berries, orange marmalade, cotton candy and vanilla. Sleek on entry, this is a big mouthful of wine all wrapped up in nicely tailored French Oak.
2006 Tofanelli Zinfandel (Napa)
$ 34.99Leaping out of the glass with notes of black cherry, candied apple, raspberry jam, orange zest and cola nut, rounded out with hints of cedar, black tea and cigar box, this Zin coats the palate gently with supple, brambly fruit concentration. Sophisticated, layered and well-balanced, the wines natural acidity marries perfectly with the fine oak tannins that lend weight and length to the mouth feel. Pairs nicely with well-ripened hard cheeses such as French Cantal. 93 points, Steve Rayman
2005 Chasseur Chardonnay Lorenzo Russian River Valley
$ 54.99"Readers looking for a grand cru Chablis-styled California white should check out the 2005 Chardonnay Lorenzo Vineyard. Sensational notes of lemon, citrus blossoms, wet stones, orange rind, and guava as well as an unmistakable minerality are followed by a wine of great ripeness, purity, and full-bodied power as well as length. Despite the fact that it was aged in nearly two-thirds new French oak, the wood is impossible to discern in the wines aroma and flavor profiles. It should drink well for 3-4 years." 94 points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Issue 174 "Intense and vibrant, with a firm, tight band of green apple and pear flavors that are concentrated and focused, ending with an earthy, minerally edge. Concentrated. Best from 2008 through 2013. 371 cases made." 93 Points - Wine Spectator, December 15, 2007 "Starting with complexing notes of roasted grains and showing a very deep and streamlined fruity note, the nose of this generous yet still developing youngster only partially prepares one for the stunning balance and depth of the wine on the palate. It has all the sweet, juicy fruit expected of the best of its appellation, and it backs it up with the richness of creme brulee and citrus blossom in flavors and aftertaste of amazing length. Withal, it is destined for better things some two years hence and seems likely to hold over twice that time and more." 92 points - Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine, September 2007
