2006 Wood Winery " Tipsy Dog" Chardonnay
$ 9.00The 2006 Chardonnay, Tipsy Dog is not only a hoot to serve but it delivers as well on price and quality. "Honeysuckle, white peaches, and apricots in its medium to full-bodied personality. With terrific freshness, purity, and length, it should drink well for 4-5 years." Remember you can always say, "The dog made me do it!" The Wood Winery is owned and operated by the Wood Family. The 80-acre Estate is located at the base of the Cuesta Grade in San Luis Obispo and enjoys the cool evening climate of the Edna Valley yet has a warmer daytime temperature similar to Paso Robles. The distinctive microclimate is ideal for growing wine grapes unique to the Central Coast of California. The first blocks of vines were planted in 1999 with the inspiration of two Cal Poly Viticulture Graduates.

2005 J.Kerr Californio Chardonnay
$ 10.95Â "This may be the best price to value wine I have ever tasted. It's hard to imagine that a wine that spent two years in barrels then another year in bottle could sell for this price. Ultrarich and concentrated, with layers of fig, citrus and tangerine flavors that are shaded by toasty oak, filling out the flavor profile and ending with a complex marshmallow edge. Drink now through 2011". CPM 05/2008 For much of his wine career John Kerr has been famed for his way with Chardonnay and Santa Barbara County's Bien Nacido Vineyard gave him the perfect fruit to show what he could do with the grape. This amazing Chardonnay is a blend of grapes from his 2004-2005 barrels. The beautifully balanced Californio (Original Mexican term for California) wine is barrel fermented but not overly oaked. It is light and crisp with lots of tropical fruit flavors and a perfect acidity and balance. This wine is rich, fresh and lively. A beautiful blend from one of the Born to a career Navy Officer, John spent his childhood moving around the country. In 1969 John was drafted into the Army and spent two years in Vietnam as a helicopter weapons specialist and door gunner. He began his winemaking career in 1972 shortly after returning home as a decorated veteran. At Brookside Winery in Ventura, California John began developing his love for grapes. In 1980 John moved to Monterey County and began seriously pursuing a winemaking career. He worked at Chalone and Jekel wineries before spending four years at Ventana Vineyards and Winery where he was in charge of production. In 1984 he returned to Santa Barbara County where he became an independent consulting winemaker, assisting Babcock Winery in their first crush, producing seven varietals that were all awarded gold medals in competitions. He assisted Brander and Houtz wineries, and was the winemaker at Houtz for four years. Working at several wineries at once, John also began working for Byron Winery in 1986. 1986 is the year of the first JJ. Kerr Wines crush. Concentrating on Chardonnay, which is the mainstay of JJ.Kerr Wines, John began making reds in 1988 with highly acclaimed Syrah wines. In 1990 Byron became an R.J. Mondovi subsidiary and John took the position of assistant winemaker but continued to nurture his own label JJ Kerr Wines. Expanding from Chardonnay, John began his ground breaking work on Pinot Noir in 1991 in Santa Barbara. In 1995 John went to work for the Firestone family as
Hat's off once again to the great folk’s at Varner Vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains for producing another blockbuster Chardonnay at a price point that is almost laughable. I mean they could price this stuff for double and it would still fly off our shelves! The just-released 2008 has a richer and more fruit dominated framework than the 2007, yet maintains its fresh approach with great acidity and has a tremendous finish complimented by wonderful mineral notes. Hot of the press, Robert Parker praises: The sensational 2008 Chardonnay Central Coast, which is fermented and aged completely in stainless steel with no malolactic fermentation, is a 30,000-cuvee of fabulous Chardonnay. Loads of tropical fruit, honeysuckle, and orange blossom notes fill the olfactory sense, as does the luscious medium-bodied texture on the palate. The wine is buttressed by crisp underlying acidity, and the result is a fresh, naked expression of Chardonnay that is top-flight. Drink it over the next year or so. These are absolutely spectacular bargains from the very high-quality Varner Winery in the Santa Cruz Mountains. This is their less expensive line-up of wines, and I encourage readers to try them – they are true winners.
