Best after 2011. 6,750 cases made." 96 Points - Wine Spectator, April 30, 2009 The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova reveals layers of dark perfumed fruit intermingled with French oak, spices, minerals, violets and licorice. The Tenuta Nuova is impressive mostly for its textural richness and sheer depth, both qualities it has in spades. The finish is long, sweet and pure. Here, too, the wine will need at least a few years in bottle before its full range of aromas and flavors emerges. Neri gave the Tenuta Nuova 30 months in medium-sized French oak tonneaux. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2024. Giacomo Neri is one of Montalcinos more gregarious producers. His passion clearly comes through in these wines, which are characterized by an emphasis on fruit and opulence. Neris Brunellos also make a great case study in the different microclimates of Montalcino. His straight Brunello di Montalcino is made from vineyards ranging from 350-480 meters in altitude located in the northeastern quadrant of the region. The Tenuta Nuova is made from a densely-planted vineyard located roughly in between SantAngelo in Colle and Castelnuovo dellAbate, in the southern part of the zone. The vines in the north typically flower three weeks later than those in the south, and naturally ripen later as well, which serves to highlight some of the differences between Montalcinos various microclimates. Neris 2004 Brunellos are immensely successful. 2003 Chateau La Gomerie (Saint-Emilion)
$ 89.99"A limited production garagiste operation, La Gomerie is treated like a favored child by its proprietor. Jean-Philippe Fort, Michel Rollands top assistant, is a consultant for this 100% Merlot-based wine produced from a 5-acre, 31-year-old vineyard. The sensational 2003 is performing even better from bottle than it did from cask. Production was a tiny 750 cases (as opposed to1,000 in an abundant year), and the finished alcohol is 13.7%, rather high for Bordeaux. Nevertheless, the wine possesses surprising freshness and liveliness, which adds to its appeal. A deep purple color is accompanied by a sweet bouquet of chocolate, black raspberries, cherries, charcoal, and toasty oak, powerful, full-bodied, concentrated flavors, and high levels of silky tannin. Low acidity and abundant glycerin suggest it can be drunk now and over the next decade. Made in a full-bodied, structured and dense style, this will be a wine you can age for two decades in the cellar. The Joseph Phelps Vineyards was founded in 1972 and is an independent, estate-based winery. It is located just outside of the St. Helena area. Phelps has developed estate-owned vineyards in the exceptional growing regions of Stagâs Leap, Rutherford, Oakville, Oak Knoll and the eastern foothills of Napa. Phelps currently has 80 acres of Pinot Noir and 20 acres of Chardonnay planted in Freestone. Phelps produces Backus Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Insignia, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, several Rhône - style wines, and a dessert wine made from Scheurebe.
