Calcu Colchagua Valley Red Blend 2005
$ 11.99750 ml. (Ref. ID#=7804612730019) 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Carmenere, and 20% Cabernet Franc. Winemakers Ricardo Rivadeneira and Alejandro Jofre artfully blend the mineral notes and fresh acidity of grapes from the Andes foothills with the ripe tannins and red fruit from the center of the valley, and add richness and body from grapes grown closer to the Pacific Ocean. The resulting wine is lightly oaked, allowing the grapes' natural, fresh fruit character to shine through. 2005
2003 Chateau Fleur de Bouard (Lalande de Pomerol)
$ 37.99" Loads of meat, spice, berry and black currant on the nose, with a hint of vanilla. Full-bodied, with solid fruit, mineral-coated tannins and an intense finish. Best after 2007. 3,750 cases made." 90 points - Wine Spectator, March 31, 2006 "The savory, dense ruby/plum/purple-colored 2003 La Fleur de Bouard reveals good density, tannin and structure, plenty of broad, sweet flavors and excellent definition as well as length. It is culled from specific parcels and vinified in tiny, squat stainless steel and oak fermenters. It receives the full Burgundy treatment of malolactic in barrel and aging sur-lie. It is also bottled (unfined and unfiltered) much later than La Fleur de Bouard (usually 33 months following the vintage). Production for the luxury wine is tiny, 250 cases versus nearly 6,000 cases of La Fleur. Anticipated Maturity: now-2016." 89 points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate #164 (APR 2006)
2006 E. Guigal St. Joseph Lieu Dit St. Joseph
$ 39.99"Deep red. Black raspberry, kirsch and cinnamon on the nose. Suave dark berry flavors show very good depth and sweetness, with silky, integrated tannins adding support and focus. The fruit lingers impressively on the finish, which is long, sweet and juicy, with a late note of baking spices. This seductive wine will be delicious soon after release." 92 points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Jan/Feb 09 "Very solid, with ripe and nicely rounded plum, currant and blackberry fruit flavors that are backed by ample cocoa and espresso hints. The long, creamy finish lets toast and fig cake notes play out. Drink now through 2012. 750 cases made." 91 points - Wine Spectator, May 31, 2009 "There is no doubting the brilliance of the 2006 St.-Joseph Lieu-Dit St.-Joseph. This beauty boasts a deep ruby/purple color as well as aromas of crushed rocks, black raspberries, cherries, flowers, and licorice. Despite the use of 100% new oak, very little wood is noticeable in the aromas and flavors of this medium-bodied, elegant St.-Joseph. It should last for at least a decade." 90-92 points - Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate, Issue 182
2005 Brancaia Ilatraia Maremma (Tuscany)
$ 49.99"Aromas of blackberry and mineral, with hints of fresh herbs. Full-bodied, with soft tannins and a long, caressing finish. Balanced and pretty. Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Petit Verdot. Best after 2009. 2,750 cases made." 92 points - Wine Spectator, October 31, 2007 "Tasting the 2005 Ilatraia next to Il Blu provides a fascinating contrast between the wines of Maremma, in the case of the former, and Chianti Classico in the case of the latter. The Ilatria shows the greater volume and depth that makes the wines from Maremma so appealing. This French oak-aged blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Sangiovese and 10% Petit Verdot is sweet and generous on the palate, where dark fruit, leather, spices, espresso and toasted oak come together in a very harmonious wine with well-integrated tannins and lovely balance. This doesnt look to be a wine destined for a long life, so it is best enjoyed over the next few years. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2015." 91 points - Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate, Issue 177
2004 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova
$ 69.99"Offers crushed berries, with flowers and sandalwood. The nose is reserved, but interesting. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long, long finish. Very tight and stylish. Racy and powerful. Needs time. Best after 2011. 6,750 cases made." 96 Points - Wine Spectator, April 30, 2009 The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova reveals layers of dark perfumed fruit intermingled with French oak, spices, minerals, violets and licorice. The Tenuta Nuova is impressive mostly for its textural richness and sheer depth, both qualities it has in spades. The finish is long, sweet and pure. Here, too, the wine will need at least a few years in bottle before its full range of aromas and flavors emerges. Neri gave the Tenuta Nuova 30 months in medium-sized French oak tonneaux. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2024. Giacomo Neri is one of Montalcinos more gregarious producers. His passion clearly comes through in these wines, which are characterized by an emphasis on fruit and opulence. Neris Brunellos also make a great case study in the different microclimates of Montalcino. His straight Brunello di Montalcino is made from vineyards ranging from 350-480 meters in altitude located in the northeastern quadrant of the region. The Tenuta Nuova is made from a densely-planted vineyard located roughly in between SantAngelo in Colle and Castelnuovo dellAbate, in the southern part of the zone. The vines in the north typically flower three weeks later than those in the south, and naturally ripen later as well, which serves to highlight some of the differences between Montalcinos various microclimates. Neris 2004 Brunellos are immensely successful. I look forward with great anticipation to the 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto, which should be released some time next year. 93 points, The Wine Advocate #183 (JUNE 2009)
