2007 Juan Gil Wrongo Dongo Jumilla
$ 6.99"(100% monastrell) Inky purple. Ripe dark berry fruits are complemented by smoked meat and dried flowers. Fleshy blackberry and plum flavors display impressive depth and power for this price point, with soft tannins adding support. Gains sweetness on the back and finishes with very good sappy persistence. A remarkable bargain." 88 points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Sep/Oct 08 "The brilliantly packaged 2007 Wrongo Dongo (named in honor of Washington DC legend Jim Arseneault) is 100% Monastrell. Medium ruby-colored, it presents a nose of mineral and earth notes that jump from the glass. Ripe and flavorful, this crowd-pleasing wine will continue to drink well for another two years." 87 points - Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate, Issue 178
2007 La Vieille Ferme Rouge Côtes du Ventoux
$ 6.99"Fresh and stylish, with black cherry, grilled herb and tobacco notes that linger on the tender, mineral-tinged finish. Drink now. 200,000 cases made." 87 points - Wine Spectator, July 31, 2009 "The 2007 Cotes du Ventoux (a blend of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, and Cinsault) is a classic bistro red offering aromas and flavors of berry fruit, licorice, pepper, and spice. Enjoy this soft, round, delicious wine over the next 1-2 years. In their inexpensive (usually under $8 a bottle) La Vieille Ferme series, they have gone to screw cap finished bottles to avoid any problems with corks. This is consistently a top value pick." 87 points - Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate, Issue 179
This is "bang for your buck" Spanish red and it is one of the finest values we have ever tasted from anywhere. It packs a punch with its rich concentration of fruit and it is thoroughly delicious to drink now. One to purchase by the case; don't miss it! Parker wrote: There are 10,000 cases of Alto Almanzora’s 2007 Este, a blend of 45% Monastrell, 25% Tempranillo, and the balance Syrah, Garnacha, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. It is sourced from the little-known DO of Almeria located in eastern Andalucia in the south-east of Spain. The wine was aged for six months in French and American oak. Deep purple in color (remarkably dense for its humble price), it offers up a kinky, full-blown nose of smoke, spice box, and wild blueberry. Ripe, succulent, and layered, this bargain-priced, hedonistic effort totally over-delivers. Buy it by the palette load and drink it over the next three years.
2007 R Wines Roogle Red (S.E. Australia)
$ 7.99"The 2007 Roogle Red is composed of 50% Shiraz, 30% Merlot, and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. It was aged in seasoned French and American oak for 12 months. Dark ruby-colored, it offers attractive aromas of cedar, cassis, blueberry, and plum. Plush and fruit-driven on the palate, this is a ripe, tasty wine for casual quaffing with burgers and pizza over the next 4-6 years. It is a very good value." 87 points - Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate, Issue 181
2007 Bodegas Ateca Garnacha de Fuego (Calatayud)
$ 7.99"Ripe raspberry, creamy vanilla and spicy licorice mingle in this exuberant red, which is alluring, plush but tender, structured more by acidity than tannins. Drink now through 2010. 6,500 cases imported. Best value." 89 points - Wine Spectator, February 28, 2009 "Bright purple. Smoky blackberry and blueberry on the nose, with subtle spice and floral qualities adding interest. Fleshy and sweet, with deep dark berry preserve flavors, supple texture and bright mineral lift. More than simply a fruit bomb, but this wine's berry flavors are impressively forceful. Finishes with very good, spicy persistence and a lingering blueberry quality. A gift at the price." 89 points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Sep/Oct 08 "The 2007 Garnacha de Fuego is 100% old-vine Garnacha sourced from 60-80 year old vineyards offering tiny yields. Dark ruby/purple-colored the nose exhibits spice box, earth notes, and wild cherry. On the palate it is slightly compact albeit with excellent flavors and good length. It is a steal at the asking price. Drink it over the next two years." 86 points - Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate, Issue 178
2007 Gallo Family Chardonnay Sonoma County
$ 7.99"Even better is the 2007 Chardonnay Sonoma. Abundant notes of white peaches and honeyed citrus emerge from this lovely Chardonnay along with admirable purity, medium body, excellent concentration, and a dry finish displaying a subtle hint of wood. It, too, should be consumed over the next 1-2 years." 88 points - Robert Parker's The Wine advocate, Issue 180 "With its vanilla buttercream and spicy, smoky overtones, this Chard also shows underlying fruit flavors of pineapples, peaches, pears and green apples. Its a crisp, supple young wine, and this is a good price to pay." 87 points - Wine Enthusiast, April 1, 2009
2007 Oxford Landing Chardonnay South Australia
$ 7.99"The 2007 Chardonnay is medium straw-colored with apple and pear aromas and flavors with a hint of tropical fruit in the background. Flavorful and balanced, it will provide pleasure over the next 1-2 years." 86 points - Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate, Issue 178
2007 Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon South Australia
$ 7.99"The 2007 Koonunga Hill Shiraz (75%) Cabernet Sauvignon (25%) was aged for eight months in seasoned oak. Purple-colored, it has an expansive perfume of blue and black fruits. On the palate it is supple-textured, ripe, and layered. This surprisingly elegant wine will evolve for several years and provide pleasure through 2017." 88 points - Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate, Issue 181
2005 Quinta de Roriz Duoro Prazo
$ 7.99"The 2005 Prazo de Roriz is another nice value, even with declining exchange rates. It is round and velvety, but with bite on the finish. It has modest depth, although it is quite acceptable for its second wine status. It seems a bit more backward than the 2004 was at a similar time, yet it evolves fairly quickly with air. It will be tasty and a crowd pleaser, fleshy, but tending to thin fast, and having a bright, crisp, flavorful finish. Drink now-2014." 88 points - Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate, Issue 178 "This is an immediately accessible blend of five of the most highly regarded Douro varieties (tourigas nacional and franca [35 percent each]; tintas barroca, roriz and cão [10 percent each]). The fruit is gentle and ripe, with scents of blueberry and black cherry, the tannins soft, their mineral edge kicked up by acidity. It's structured like a cru Beaujolais grown on schist-a by-the-case buy for casual entertaining." 88 points - Wine & Spirits, April 2007 "Crisp, with pure red plum, mineral and raspberry flavors. Lip-smacking finish of spice, red cherry and maple. Drink now through 2009. 3,000 cases imported." 87 points - Wine Spectator, May 31, 2007
Apothic Red 2008 Winemaker's Blend
$ 8.98The 2008 release from the fine folks at Apothic is another knockout value, just like the 2007 that sold out in mere minutes when offered earlier this year. Robert Parker called the 2007 "One of the greatest bargains I have ever tasted from California" and it is our opinion that the 2008 delivers every bit the same quality as the 2007. This fun, easy drinking red packs a wallop with its fruit-driven core and soft velvety structure. It is the ultimate pizza and burger wine. And if we can't convince you to put some away, check out what Robert Parker wrote about the 2007 Apothic Red in his year-end issue of The Wine Advocate: I am breaking my own rules about only reviewing Napa wines in this report simply because this is one of the greatest bargains I have ever tasted from California. Made by the Gallo family, it is a blend of 45% Syrah, 44% Zinfandel, 9% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon that comes from primarily Lodi as well as Sonoma, the Central Coast, and Napa. Discounters will undoubtedly have it for even less than $10. A hedonist’s dream, this fruit-bomb exhibits loads of berry fruit, pepper, and spice, silky tannins, and an attractive mouthfeel. Neither heavy nor overly alcoholic, there are 15,000 cases of this beauty, which will provide enormous relief for weary, recession-challenged wine consumers. It should drink well for 1-2 years. Bravo to Gallo!
2007 Evodia by Bodegas Altovinum (Calatayud)
$ 8.99"The vineyards for this new project are between 850 and 1000 meters of elevation and the Garnacha vines are up to 100 years of age, planted on pure slate. Purple-colored, this 100% Garnacha offers a lovely perfume of spice box, mineral, and wild cherry. This leads to an intensely fruity wine with loads of flavor, a smooth texture, and a pure, fruit-filled finish." 88 points - Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate, Issue 178
2007 Chateau Oupia (Minervois)
$ 9.99Iche has crafted a 2007 Minervois Tradition that smells of ripe cassis and black cherries tinged with resinous herbs and bitter fruit pit and toasted nuts, elements that all contribute to its almost silken-textured palate impression where one finds underlying richness of salted beef stock and dark chocolate. In the best manner of its vintage, we have here a combination of richness and elegance. The finish of chocolate-covered black fruits, bouillon, and herbal concentrate is not in the least superficially sweet, but instead remains possessed of real refreshment, with the cyanic note of cherry stone and tincture of iodine offering lasting, subtly bitter counterpoint. This exceptional value should be a delight over at least the next 2-3 years. Andre Iche renders a style of Minervois slightly reminiscent of Marc Tempes (at Domaine Courbissac) in its restraint and sheer refreshment traits rare in this appellation as well as in its complexity. From centenarian Carignan, with smaller amounts of Syrah and Grenache. 90 Points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Aug 2009) Syrah, Carignan and Grenache from hillside sites. A real value, this wine, bright and fresh, delivers real intensity of flavor, blackberry, smoked meats and dried fruits, and a nice underlying minerality. For those you buying the 2005 from us before, you will recognize the wine, that is the beauty of domaine bottled wines. 89 Points, Rhett Beiletti, B-21
2007 Mas de Guiot Grenache/Syrah
$ 9.99It is somewhat confusing, but under the Mas de Guiot label, their 2007 Vin de Pays, made from 60% Syrah and 40% Grenache, is a winner. There are just under 3,500 cases of this wine, which displays a dense ruby/purple color and beautiful, sweet creme de cassis fruit intermixed with touches of forest floor, acacia flowers, and earth. Aged in tank and old barrels, the wine is dense and richly fruity, with silky tannins. It should be drunk over the next 1-2 years, as the real value of these wines is their exuberance and rich fruit. 89 Points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Oct 2009)
