  1. 2006 Au Bon Climat, Chardonnay "375ML" 1/2 Bottles

    $ 11.99

    Burgundian in sensibility but with California style is one way of describing Jim Clendenen's Chardonnays- Structure and restraint melded with bountiful opulence is another. In the glass, buttery brioche marries with tropical fruits in an irresistible elixir that will leave the bottle drained before you know it. Try it with turbot for a match of delicacy and richness. Deliciously complex and stylish, rich, earthy and oily, with layers of fig, toasty oak, nectarine, citrus. A long finish keeps pumping out the flavors. Within the heart of Santa Barbara County is the Au Bon Climat winery, situated on the world-famous Bien Nacido Vineyard. Renowned winemaker and owner, Jim Clendenen, induces his wines with a creative and energetic edge. It began in 1982 as a partnership between Adam Tolmach and Clenenden and quickly obtained a reputation for their Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The grapes for these wines come from the greatest vineyards within the Santa Barbara region from such locations as Santa Ynez and Santa Maria Valleys. Some are also sourced from the Edna Valleys and Arroyo Grande region. In 1989 and 1990, Robert Parker acknowledged Au Bon Climat as one of the best wineries of the world. Also, Clendenen has been named Winemaker of the Year in 1992 by the Los Angeles Times, as well as received recognition in 2001 by Food and Wine Magazine. This reputable winery lives up to its translated meaning, “a well-exposed vineyard,” producing internationally-recognized wines.

  5. 2006 Walter Hansel Chardonnay Cahill Lane Vineyard Russian River

    $ 36.99

    One of the two final cuvees to be released from the 2006 Chardonnays is the Cahill Lane, which displays hazelnut, honeysuckle, some buttered brioche and creme caramel notes, good fruit, richness, and depth, but given its quickly evolving style, it needs to be drunk over the next 1-2 years. This is a source for very fine Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs at some of the most realistic prices to be found in Northern California. Like several producers in the Russian River, the 2006s out of bottle from Walter Hansel Winery seem to be evolving quickly and, by-and-large, are slightly less impressive than they were at the beginning of their lives. Nevertheless, the good producers have achieved noteworthy success in this vintage, and certainly Stephen Hansel should be proud of what he’s been able to accomplish in that vintage. Moreover, the 2007s look to be a return to the brilliant quality of the wines produced here in 2005 and 2004. Tasting through barrel samples of all the 2007 Pinot Noirs, this looks to be a superb vintage for Stephen Hansel. Yields were very small, averaging about 1.5 tons of fruit per acre, so these wines reflect a level of concentration, but with the overt fragrance and good acidity that the cool growing season provided. 92 Points, Robert Parkers' Wine Advocate, Issue 180

  6. 2006 Eddy Family Wines - Elodian Pinot Noir

    $ 37.95

    Sourced from Ron & Linda Moore's and Monk’s Gate Vineyard, the 2006 Elodian Pinot noir is a balanced wine with a smooth and easy experience. This flavorful wine offers bright cherry and strawberry with a subtle hint of French oak to give it a creamy vanilla finish. The wine is dominated by a bright fruit flavor that makes it fresh and vivid for any occasion. Founder, Tom Eddy dedicates his winemaking skills to producing a Cabernet that is flavorful, elegant and rich. His product is a result of the hillside vineyards that deliver intense fruit and depth of structure. Their location is situated on 22 acres of unspoiled Calistoga land, sitting 1,000 feet above the valley floor. The winery has recently moved from “paper to property,” as the architectural drawings are finalized. Eddy sources his grapes from a selective bunch, ranging from a variety of locations from Napa Valley to New Zealand. Tom Eddy Wines is a small, ultra premium winery that is devoted to producing a wide range of limited production varietal wines. With his long-term vineyard relationships, Eddy has been able to produce better quality and more consistent wines, as reflected in his collection.

  11. 2006 Conn Valley Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve (Napa)

    $ 49.99

    In the more irregular vintage of 2006, the Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve has also turned out strong, with sweet creme de cassis fruit intermixed with incense, charcoal, and hints of asphalt and creosote, along with some subtle smoky barrel smells. The wine has a big, substantial mouthfeel, firm but sweet tannins, and a generous, savory finish with outstanding purity and extract. This wine is more backward, as one might expect in this vintage, but it promises to evolve for 25+ years as well. It’s safe to say that Todd Anderson and winemaking assistant Mac Sawyer are flying on all cylinders with their Bordeaux varietals at this winery tucked away in the Conn Valley. They also make some Pinot Noir which I am decidedly less enthusiastic about, and some Petite Sirah which is promising. The Chardonnays are made with no malolactic fermentation, but have surprising weight, richness, and aging potential. Think of them as California versions of Corton-Charlemagne. There are three red wine cuvees made – the Right Bank, based on the Pomerol concept of a Merlot-dominated wine with some Cabernet Franc in it, the pure Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, which has long been the flagship wine of the estate, and of course, the Eloge, which is more of a Medoc-like blend of two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon, about 20-25% Cabernet Franc, and the balance Merlot and Petit Verdot. These are all sensational wines, all worth tracking down in the marketplace. 94 Points, Robert Parkers' Wine Advocate, Issue # 180
