This Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon offers layers of flavor, reflecting its varied terroir. Aromatic violets, tobacco, cocoa and bright red berry character leads into rich, concentrated fruit flavors of raspberries, currants and succulent black cherries. The ripe fruit flavor is juxtaposed with natural acidity for a balanced, well-structured wine with medium tannins and a supple finish.
Rutherford Ranch 2005 Chardonnay
$ 11.98This characteristic Chardonnay starts off with aromas of freshly picked apricots and sweet honey. The fruit theme continues with scents of crisp green apples and just peeled lemon zest followed by hints of vanilla and crème brûlée. Full bodied, with beautiful balance, this Napa Valley Chardonnay with flavors of ripe peach, pear, vanilla and crisp Meyer lemon are perfectly balanced leaving your palate with a clean, crisp finish. Food Recommendation: This Chardonnay is perfect for a summer afternoon - slightly chilled it is refreshing to drink this wine on its own or while grilling fresh salmon or sea bass with fresh herbs.
Calcu Colchagua Valley Red Blend 2005
$ 11.99750 ml. (Ref. ID#=7804612730019) 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Carmenere, and 20% Cabernet Franc. Winemakers Ricardo Rivadeneira and Alejandro Jofre artfully blend the mineral notes and fresh acidity of grapes from the Andes foothills with the ripe tannins and red fruit from the center of the valley, and add richness and body from grapes grown closer to the Pacific Ocean. The resulting wine is lightly oaked, allowing the grapes' natural, fresh fruit character to shine through. 2005
2005 Pierre Luneau-Papin Clos des Allees Vieilles Vignes
$ 12.99"Green-gold. Citrus fruits, lanolin and minerals on the nose, with orange zest and white flower accents. Full, fleshy and deep, with spicy citrus and quince flavors, bright firming acidity, and a finishing white pepper note. This almost numbs the palate with peppery intensity and would be sensational with raw oysters or sashimi." 91 points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Mar/Apr 07 "...smells of apple blossom, apple seed, lemon and honey in a manner reminiscent of the Mosel. Satisfyingly, indeed lusciously full of fruit on the palate as well as surprisingly plush in texture for Muscadet, this finishes with real density and richness, while never forgetting its Muscadet duty to refresh. Pierre and Monique Luneau-Papin are among those Muscadet vignerons offering a range of different bottles from individual micro-climates, and I did not taste them all. They also release their wines at a leisurely pace, and considering the freshness and complexity of a four year old release from these cellars it is no wonder." 90 Points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate #172 (Aug 2007) RHETT'S CHOICE: When this newsletter hits, Bob and I will be in the Loire Valley in Angers at the 22nd Annual Salon Des Vins De Loire, the largest exposition of Loire valley wines in the world. This producer is a mainstay of great Muscadet wines, one I always look for while tasting in Angers, and we have just nabbed the last 50 cases in existence of this extraordinary wine. Intense and balanced, the wine exhibits a mineral laden and spicy character with a rich and ripe center palate sensation. Crisp and dry while having excellent fruit, Clos Des Allees exhibits a very complex character and is one the best white wine values I have come across. While in France next month it is certain that I will indulge in a few trays of raw oysters, I only hope that this wine is offered as an accompaniment. 91 Points, Rhett Beiletti, B-21 Staff Selection
