  4. 2005 Verdad Tempranillo

    $ 17.95

    A lovely light garnet color with aromas of ripe red cherry, cocoa, smokey-spice and some toasty cinnamon. There are lots of lovely soft fruits on the palate, with spices, a hint of pepper and some cleansing acid. Beautifully balanced this full-bodied wine is very approachable, a bit complex, and overflowing with value. A blend of 75% Tempranillo, 15% Syrah and 10% Grenache. This limited production wine was aged 16 months before bottling. Only 720 cases made. Louisa Sawyar Lindquist spent the early 80’s studying and working in the vineyards of Long Island. Her background in viticulture served her well when she moved to California and began working with wineries and their vineyards. Louisa began dating Bob Lindquist, the owner/winemaker of Qupé Wine Cellars, and introduced him to her favorite Spanish wines. In time they began planting small blocks of the two grape varietals at the Ibarra-Young Vineyard in the Santa Ynez Valley on the Central Coast of California, experimenting wi Using Spanish grape varietals, Verdad generates a limited production of delicious wines. These wines reflect the true flavors of the varietal and the unique terroir in which they are grown. Louisa Sawyer Lindquist produces her wines at Qupe under the direction of her husband, Bob Lindquist. The 2000 Verdad Albarino marks the first release from Lindquist. Verdad also makes a dry Rose and a Tempranillo with a bit of Syrah and Grenache blended in. As California’s first winery to be solely devoted to Spanish varietals, it is the truth that Verdad produces exquisite wines of top notch quality.

  5. 2005 Beaulieu Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford Napa Valley

    $ 24.99

    "Here is proof that not all classic Cabernets from Napa come with three-digit price tags. For, while this one is not as compelling as its mate, it is going to provide more early drinking pleasure, and the keen focus to its fruit and the rich, milk chocolate and ripe cherry sweetness tinged with hints of loam and sassafras in its flavors are precise portrayals of Napa Valley Cabernet in its most inviting guise. Nothing at this price compares. GOOD VALUE." 90 points - Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine, August 2008 "Medium crimson hue. Scents of dark chocolate and light cherry. Pleasing peppery flavors that accompany combed tannins with sweet maple accents. Black fruit rings on a clean close with a slight drying component." 91 points - The Wine News, Oct/Nov 2008

  7. 2005 Ravenswood Zinfandel Teldeschi Vineyard (Dry Creek)

    $ 29.99

    "With lots and lots of well-defined, optimally ripened blackberry and stone fruit notes leading the way in both its very deep, full-scaled aromas and wonderfully well-extracted flavors, this year's Teldeschi hits all the right varietal marks. It is at once endowed with zesty acidity and palpable tannins, yet both of those pieces of the puzzle are appropriately buffered by plenty of real fruit at its very heart. The wine's obvious richness may tempt some into early drinking, but this one is bound to get better and better if allowed three to five years in bottle." 95 points - Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine, January 2008 "Enticing scents of raspberry and wild cherry with a touch of oak. Juicy, fresh flavors of Bing cherry and raspberry liqueur. Plush tannins in the lingering close." 92 points -The Wine News, Nov/Dec 2007 "Saturated purple. Explosively aromatic nose features powerful blackberry, candied plum and fruitcake notes and an exotic Asian spice element. Not at all heavy, though, with the palate showing impressively energetic red and dark berry flavors, molten tannins and a taut, youthful quality on the back. According to Peterson, "this is the best fruit out of Dry Creek Valley." 91-92 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, May/June 2007

  8. 2005 Sebastiani Cabernet Sauvignon (Alexander Valley)

    $ 29.99

    "11% Merlot; 8.5% Malbec; 3.5% Petit Verdot. The unqualified star of the current Sebastiani line-up of new Cabernets, this very rich offering is brimming with both oaky sweetness and deep, well-defined fruit. Its themes of ripe currants are laced with lots of vanilla, cocoa and cream, and its plush palatal feel is followed up with a measure of trim tannins. If thoroughly enjoyable now, it comes with a recommendation of three or four years of age. GOOD VALUE." 90 points - Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine, April 2008 "Dense garnet hue with reddish notes at the rim. Sweet notes with red fruit, orange peel and pretty vanilla aromas. Chewy flavors on entry with pepper, black fruit and a good backing of acidity. Tart cherry flavorings on the finish with the accent of oak-laced tannins." 90 points - The Wine News, Oct/Nov 2008

  9. 2005 Hendry Primitivo Block 24 Napa Valley

    $ 29.99

    Hendry once again hits the mark with Primitivo, and, as in the past, the wine is both unstinting in ripeness and very long on deep fruit and wonderfully rich oak. It is supple and surprisingly polished given its riper bias, and it has so much fruity mass that its claim of 15.8% alcohol goes nearly unnoticed. Late-arriving tannins lend structural spine without adding undue toughness, and, while we would chose to set it aside for a few years, it is the kind of wine that will have unrepentant fans of very big Zins simply swooning even now. 93 points, Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine Volume 30 Issue 3: January 2008

  10. 2005 Silver Oak Twomey Merlot

    $ 49.95

    Huge Holiday Wine Sale! Regular Price: $55.99 Sale Price: $49.95 Twomey Merlot was recently named by Wine & Spirits Magazine as one of the 10 Most Popular Merlots. California Merlot with a French sensibility that is the essence of Twomey’s flagship Napa Valley Merlot. It is the result of balancing the soft fruitiness that makes Merlot so appealing with the depth and concentration that characterize Merlots of true distinction. Robust yet elegant, it fills the mouth with its luscious flavors and opulent texture. The Twomey story begins with a remarkable vineyard – the Soda Canyon Ranch in southeastern Napa Valley – which the Duncan family acquired in 1999. Planted with the finest French clones in well-drained volcanic soils, the vineyard enabled the Duncans and Winemaker Daniel Baron to fulfill a long-held dream: to produce a Napa Valley Merlot with the depth and concentration that characterize Merlots of true distinction. Today, Twomey Cellars continues to make wines that reflect the very best of their vineyard and vintage. In 2000, we secured the nine-acre West Pin vineyard in Sonoma’s Russian River Valley, legendary for its extraordinary Pinot Noirs. This provided the perfect opportunity to put our unique mark on this varietal by creating a handcrafted Pinot Noir that’s both delicate and charismatic.

  11. 2002 Beringer Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 375ml

    $ 49.99

    "The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve may not equal the fabulous concentration and intensity of the 2001, but it’s not far off the mark. It is a fruit-forward, softer, more flamboyant, already seductive effort displaying gorgeous notes of chocolaty creme de cassis, some spicy, high-quality, toasty oak, a rich, plush, savory, expansive mid-palate, and a long, heady finish with elevated glycerin and plenty of sweet tannin and fruit. This wine is delicious yet promises to age gorgeously for 15-20 years. Ed Sbragia compares it to the 1992 which, by the way, is drinking superbly in 2005, but is one of those rare vintages that has never gone through a closed period. It’s always a fascinating education to taste through these component parts, but the resulting blend that Ed Sbragia puts together, the extraordinary Private Reserve, is one of the great Cabernet Sauvignons of California and he has fashioned a succession of beauties since 1991. In fact, there are two gorgeous ones in the market, the profound 2001 and the flamboyant, exotic 2002." 94 Points - Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate, Issue 162 "Good full ruby-red. Sexy aromas of currant and dark chocolate. Compellingly sweet and densely packed, with lovely vinosity giving shape to the flavors of dark berries, cedar and minerals. Very fine-grained and very long on the palate, with the tannins perfectly buffered by the wine's material. This wine, mostly from Steinhauer and St. Helena fruit, went into the barrel in January of 2003 and remained there for two years, undisturbed except for a monthly topping-up. Has the balance to offer considerable early appeal, but this bottling has a long track record for aging gracefully in bottle and surprising with its longevity." 94 points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, May/Jun 06 Rich, extracted and layered, with dark roast espresso. Exotic toffee, brown sugar and mocha join rich blueberry and blackberry flavors. Intense and very ripe, pushing the envelope at all points. Fans of this style will love it. Drink now through 2009. 5,100 cases made. 92 Points, The Wine Spectator (Nov 2006)

  12. 2005 Jayson by Pahlmeyer Meritage Red (Napa Valley)

    $ 49.99

    "83% Merlot; 11% Cabernet Sauvignon; 3% Cabernet Franc; 2% Other. Here is yet another prodigious wine from the accomplished hand of Jayson Pahlmeyer. From its concentrated aromas leaping from the glass with notes of cherry, coffee, cassis, dried berries and creme brulee to its full-bodied, mouthfilling passage across the palate, this wine is incredibly dramatic. It is bound to be a real hit alongside lamb and beef roasts for years to come, but it is also a bit outsized and direct for greatness." 90 points - Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine, March 2009

  13. 2005 Miner Chardonnay Wild Yeast Napa Valley

    $ 49.99

    "Complex notes of ripe apples, creme brulee, toasted bread and savory spices are combined in the deeply framed, rich aromas of this somewhat full-bodied, mouthfilling and well-balanced wine. It follows on the palate with ripe and wide-ranging flavors and has both the range and the depth to be a great mealtime choice to accompany well-seasoned roasted chickens served with fancy reduction sauce or for the fleshy fishes with fusion-influenced sauces. It does not need long-aging but is certain to reward a few years of patient cellaring." 95 points - Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine, September 2007

  14. 2005 Chasseur Chardonnay Lorenzo Russian River Valley

    $ 54.99

    "Readers looking for a grand cru Chablis-styled California white should check out the 2005 Chardonnay Lorenzo Vineyard. Sensational notes of lemon, citrus blossoms, wet stones, orange rind, and guava as well as an unmistakable minerality are followed by a wine of great ripeness, purity, and full-bodied power as well as length. Despite the fact that it was aged in nearly two-thirds new French oak, the wood is impossible to discern in the wine’s aroma and flavor profiles. It should drink well for 3-4 years." 94 points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Issue 174 "Intense and vibrant, with a firm, tight band of green apple and pear flavors that are concentrated and focused, ending with an earthy, minerally edge. Concentrated. Best from 2008 through 2013. 371 cases made." 93 Points - Wine Spectator, December 15, 2007 "Starting with complexing notes of roasted grains and showing a very deep and streamlined fruity note, the nose of this generous yet still developing youngster only partially prepares one for the stunning balance and depth of the wine on the palate. It has all the sweet, juicy fruit expected of the best of its appellation, and it backs it up with the richness of creme brulee and citrus blossom in flavors and aftertaste of amazing length. Withal, it is destined for better things some two years hence and seems likely to hold over twice that time and more." 92 points - Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine, September 2007
