Garciarevalo 2005 Casamaro Tinto Rueda
$ 9.49Responding to the market’s demand for great wines at value prices, here is an excellent value red wine that has never seen a day in oak. The gutsy 2005 Casamaro Tinto (100% Tempranillo) possesses a dark ruby/purple color as well as notes of pepper, spice, earth, and sweet cherry fruit. The tannins are elegant in this personality-filled, bistro-styled red. There seems to be an identity crisis at many modern Spanish wineries. Character and distinctiveness are being sacrificed for slickness and precious critical accolades. Casamaro Tinto is the antithesis—instead of a heavy, boorish international style, this Rueda wine. It’s a red to serve a little chilled with a young chèvre covered in rosemary. About Garciarevalo: In the heart of Rueda is the family-owned winery of Garciarevalo. If you visit their vineyards you may notice something odd about the ground; the sandy soils scattered with the occasional ancient seashell might make you forget that these vineyards are located in central Spain, at an elevation of 900 meters. These sandy soils provided a natural protection from phylloxera when the pest spread across the region about 100 years ago. Ranging from 100 to 145 years old, many of those vines still grow today.
Chateau Faizeau 2005 Vieilles Vignes Bordeaux
$ 19.98Wine Spectator: 90 Points Chateau Faizeau produces one of Bordeaux's great value reds and today's offer adds to this wines incredible value. From the epic 2005 vintage, this is surely one of the great buys in a vintage where prices for the top crus set record highs. If you love great tasting Bordeaux but prices have kept you away, than this ones for you! Want ready-to-drink Bordeaux from a great vintage under twenty bucks? This is it! Has pretty berry, coffee and vanilla character. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins, lots of sweet black fruit and a long finish. Best after 2012. James Suckling, Wine Spectator Possibly the finest Faizeau made to date, this sleeper of the vintage reveals a deep ruby/purple color along with a lovely nose of kirsch, licorice, and pain grille. Full-bodied, ripe, and seamless with excellent harmony among its component parts, it hit 14.5% natural alcohol and is made from 100% Merlot. This extravagant, flamboyant effort should drink well for a decade. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate Good bright ruby. Vibrant, pure aromas of black cherry, black raspberry, licorice and dark chocolate. Silky and suave in the mouth but with lovely vinosity to leaven the wine's deep sweetness. I love the sugar/acid snap here. Very fresh hints of licorice and exotic ginger. Nicely mouthcoating and lush on the back end, finishing with spreading, ripe tannins and a chocolatey flavor. An excellent performance. Half of these vines date back to 1911. This one weighs in at 14.75% alcohol and would make a perfect ringer in a tasting of California cabernets. 2005 Michael Grace Wines Syrah
$ 22.00Handcrafted by Michael and Grace McIntosh, this Rhone style wine is extremely limited with only 100 cases produced. Elegant, dark purple red, this Syrah is full-bodied and fruit forward, opening with red and dark fruit with spice notes. On the attack: flavors of red currant, plum, sweet tobacco and a hint of cocoa. Ample yet smooth tannins make this a long-lived wine that will age exceptionally well. Luxurious for sipping by itself. In 2001 Michael and Grace McIntosh set out to create flavorful, superbly balanced wines. Doing most of the work themselves, the husband and wife team produce meticulously handcrafted, exquisite, Southern Rhone style wines. The pair has enjoyed success from the start. Their first release, a 2001 Santa Barbara County Syrah won a silver medal at the West Coast Wine competition in 2004. Each year since, they have built upon these accomplishments with outstanding releases. The philosophy behind Michael Grace wines is simple: Good grapes make good wine. Their one of a kind wines may be enjoyed upon release or cellared for future enjoyment.
2005 Tinto Figuero "12" Crianza
$ 24.95Figuero’s Twelve Months In Barrel has a deep red color with blue highlights that signifies good ripeness. The initial aromas are clean and intense, with well-matured red berries and enhanced by sweet touches of oak and a little balsamic eucalyptus and liquorice at the end. The taste is balanced and full-flavored, with sweet, round tannins married to light acidity, giving a fresh, harmonic tone to the palate. There is a hint of mint and minerals on the finish, which is also silky and elegant. Jose Maria Garcia and Milagros Figuero are a vine-growing couple who have devoted their entire lives to looking after their "majuelos," or young vines. They are proud heirs to a culture that has been handed down through several generations. Each day is filled with care of more than 45 hectares of vines, over half of which were carefully and meticulously farmed by their ancestors, some of the vines still producing grapes today date back to the 1930s. After many years of concentrating exclusively on the cultivating their vines with the aim of producing "top flight" grapes that were then turned into the finest quality wines by renowned wine makers in Spain's premiere Ribera del Duero wine regions, the couple decided to embark on a project that they knew would take a great deal of tenacity and expertise - to make their own wines. Their simple, straight-forward mission statement is to "make the Garcia Figuero wines and winery reflect the experience, hard work and perseverance of generations." The wines of Garcia Figuero are all 100% Tempranillo - Spain's "signature" red grape, the backbone of the wines from the Ribera del Duero and the only grape variety planted on the Estate. Twenty five hectares of Garcia Figuero's vineyards feature Tempranillo vines older than 60 years. In 2001, with the aid of their three children - Carlos, Henar and Antonio - the actual winery became a reality. Every once in a while a very special deal comes along, and this is one of them. The Yarra Yering 2005 Pinot Noir is a wine of exceptional quality and complexity. Like many other wineries, the economic climate has slowed sales to a point where top-flight wines are now becoming more readily available at a reduced price. This makes for outstanding deals for the consumer. This is one such wine. In 1969, after nearly fifty years of dormant wine making, Dr. Bailey Carrodus finished a long search in Victoria’s Yarra Valley for the perfect vineyard site, planting 12 hectacres of vines at the foot of the Warramate Hills. With a degree in botany, another in winemaking and a doctorate earned at Oxford for research into plant physiology, combined with a passion for great wine and a fiercely independent mind, Dr. Carrodus began producing some of the most highly acclaimed wines in the area. Produced from what are amongst the oldest Pinot Noir vines in the Yarra Valley, this wine has developed an underground following over its existence that is beginning to be recognized as standing alongside the, historically, more awarded wines from the estate. Deviating from current oenological trend and fashion, the fruit is largely handled in its usual manner, favoring partial crushing and a short cuvaison as integral tools in the preservation and expression of vineyard elements in concert with its startling varietal character. Aristocratic, fragrant, intensely perfumed, voluptuous, sweet strawberry/plum richness, anise, beetroot, silky in texture, richness, round, soft and mouth-filling to the end. James Halladay - 94 Points Deeply coloured; rich, plush and mouth-coating, with deep, sweet, plum fruit which takes you to the edge of dry red, but doesn't go over; very good fruit, oak and tannin balance; heroic pinot. Cork. Stephen Tanzer - 92 Points Deep red. Impressively complex nose combines fresh and dried red berry aromas with fresh meat and forest floor nuances; this could pass for a Gevrey-Chambertin. Concentrated raspberry and blackberry flavors are complicated by bitter amaro and cherry skin notes and sweetened by floral pastille. Firms up on the chewy finish, which features an intriguing mineral quality and excellent persistence. Robert Parker - 91 Points Dark ruby-colored, it exhibits aromas of pain grille, scorched earth, meat, black cherry, and black raspberry. Full-bodied, mouth-filling and ripe, this uniquely-styled Pinot Noir has layers of sweet fruit, 6-8 years of aging potential, and a long finish. It could easily masquerade as a Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru (from a top producer). Varietal: 100% Pinot Noir Bottle Size: 750ml Country: Australia Region: Yarra Valley In Store for Pickup/Delivery: Today
The estate-s top bottling, the 2005 Cepparello, is another strong effort. Classy and elegant, it possesses well-delineated vibrant dark red fruit intermingled with toasted oak and minerals. It remains quite fresh and will require a few years of bottle age to develop its full range of aromas and flavors. That said, it is a smaller-scaled Cepparello that should mature earlier than the superb 2004. Cepparello is 100% Sangiovese aged in French oak. Once again, Paolo De Marchi has turned out a superlative wine. 92 Points, Robert Parkers' Wine Advocate, Issue # 177
2005 Amon Ra Godolphin (Barossa)
$ 49.99"A blend of 80% Shiraz and 20% Cabernet, this rich, almost Port-like wine also shows a slight herbal noteenough to give it some lift and complexity. Its inky black in color, imbued with layers of dark fruit so deep they threaten to suck you in before being lightened ever so slightly by hints of vanilla and spice. Long and lush on the finish. Drink now-2015." 94 points - Wine Enthusiast, November 1, 2007 "The 2005 Godolphin, a blend of 80% Shiraz (from 85-year-old vines) and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon (from 60-year-old vines), was aged in 100% new oak, primarily 300-liter French hogsheads. It represents a beautiful marriage of power and elegance, displaying an inky/blue/purple color as well as notions of black raspberries, blueberries, graphite, and sweet pain grille. Ripe, pure, and medium to full-bodied with sweet but noticeable tannin, it can be drunk now or cellared for 12-15 years." 93 points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Issue 167 (Oct 2006) "Dark purple. The nose offers an explosively aromatic array of sexy red and dark berry scents accompanied by vanilla, sandalwood, cola and baking spices. Precise blackberry and boysenberry flavors reach every nook and cranny of the palate and seem to gain energy on the finish. Extremely appealing, suave and fresh, offering a striking melange of bright and ripe qualities." 93 points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Jul/Aug 07
2002 Beringer Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 375ml
$ 49.99"The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve may not equal the fabulous concentration and intensity of the 2001, but its not far off the mark. It is a fruit-forward, softer, more flamboyant, already seductive effort displaying gorgeous notes of chocolaty creme de cassis, some spicy, high-quality, toasty oak, a rich, plush, savory, expansive mid-palate, and a long, heady finish with elevated glycerin and plenty of sweet tannin and fruit. This wine is delicious yet promises to age gorgeously for 15-20 years. Ed Sbragia compares it to the 1992 which, by the way, is drinking superbly in 2005, but is one of those rare vintages that has never gone through a closed period. Its always a fascinating education to taste through these component parts, but the resulting blend that Ed Sbragia puts together, the extraordinary Private Reserve, is one of the great Cabernet Sauvignons of California and he has fashioned a succession of beauties since 1991. In fact, there are two gorgeous ones in the market, the profound 2001 and the flamboyant, exotic 2002." 94 Points - Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate, Issue 162 "Good full ruby-red. Sexy aromas of currant and dark chocolate. Compellingly sweet and densely packed, with lovely vinosity giving shape to the flavors of dark berries, cedar and minerals. Very fine-grained and very long on the palate, with the tannins perfectly buffered by the wine's material. This wine, mostly from Steinhauer and St. Helena fruit, went into the barrel in January of 2003 and remained there for two years, undisturbed except for a monthly topping-up. Has the balance to offer considerable early appeal, but this bottling has a long track record for aging gracefully in bottle and surprising with its longevity." 94 points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, May/Jun 06 Rich, extracted and layered, with dark roast espresso. Exotic toffee, brown sugar and mocha join rich blueberry and blackberry flavors. Intense and very ripe, pushing the envelope at all points. Fans of this style will love it. Drink now through 2009. 5,100 cases made. 92 Points, The Wine Spectator (Nov 2006)
2004 Stephen Pannell Shiraz (McLaren Vale)
$ 49.99The 2004 Shiraz (100% Shiraz from a 90-year-old vineyard) was aged in primarily used French barrels (20% new) for 12 months prior to bottling. As in its two siblings, the alcohol is in the 14% range. This deep ruby/purple-colored, elegant Shiraz exhibits sweet floral, black currant, and blackberry aromas intermixed with notions of crushed rocks and subtle wood. Pure, rich, and multi-layered with considerable soul and personality, this beauty can be drunk now and over the next 10-12 years. 95 Points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate #161 (Oct 2005) From a new, promising young producer, Stephen Pannells debut releases were tasted immediately prior to bottling. A member of the family that founded Mosswood in the Margaret River area of Western Australia, Pannell was the chief red winemaker at Hardys between 1999-2003, and did several apprenticeships in France, most notably at Domaine Comte Lafon and Mouton-Rothschild. A believer in non-manipulative winemaking, he is attempting to produce Australian wines with European-styled complexity and finesse without sacrificing the natural raw materials provided by Mother Nature.
2005 Brancaia Il Blu (Tuscany)
$ 59.99"The flagship 2005 Il Blu, 50% Sangiovese, 45% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, spent 20 months in French oak. Crushed flowers, raspberries and sweet toasted oak waft from the glass as this beautiful wine reveals its feminine personality. The red fruit turns darker on the palate, where leather and spice overtones add further complexity. Although the 2005 doesnt have the sheer opulence of the 2004, it does offer terrific balance in a smaller-scaled style, with well-integrated tannins, notable persistence and commendable balance. This is a very strong effort from Brancaia. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020." 92 points - Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate, Issue 177 "This sleek and jammy blend is 50 percent sangiovese and 45 percent merlot (the remainder is cabernet sauvignon). The fruit feels primary and fresh, a strawberry sweetness that's framed by sandy tannin. Balanced and long, this will match pork ribs fresh off the grill." 91 points - Wine & Spirits, April 2008 "Subtle yet complex aromas of mineral, currant and blackberry. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and a caressing finish. Not a big wine, but balanced and refined. Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best after 2009. 4,100 cases made." 90 points - Wine Spectator, October 31, 2007
