  1. 2005 J.Kerr Californio Chardonnay

    $ 10.95

     "This may be the best price to value wine I have ever tasted. It's hard to imagine that a wine that spent two years in barrels then another year in bottle could sell for this price. Ultrarich and concentrated, with layers of fig, citrus and tangerine flavors that are shaded by toasty oak, filling out the flavor profile and ending with a complex marshmallow edge. Drink now through 2011". CPM 05/2008 For much of his wine career John Kerr has been famed for his way with Chardonnay and Santa Barbara County's Bien Nacido Vineyard gave him the perfect fruit to show what he could do with the grape. This amazing Chardonnay is a blend of grapes from his 2004-2005 barrels. The beautifully balanced Californio (Original Mexican term for California) wine is barrel fermented but not overly oaked. It is light and crisp with lots of tropical fruit flavors and a perfect acidity and balance. This wine is rich, fresh and lively. A beautiful blend from one of the Born to a career Navy Officer, John spent his childhood moving around the country. In 1969 John was drafted into the Army and spent two years in Vietnam as a helicopter weapons specialist and door gunner. He began his winemaking career in 1972 shortly after returning home as a decorated veteran. At Brookside Winery in Ventura, California John began developing his love for grapes. In 1980 John moved to Monterey County and began seriously pursuing a winemaking career. He worked at Chalone and Jekel wineries before spending four years at Ventana Vineyards and Winery where he was in charge of production. In 1984 he returned to Santa Barbara County where he became an independent consulting winemaker, assisting Babcock Winery in their first crush, producing seven varietals that were all awarded gold medals in competitions. He assisted Brander and Houtz wineries, and was the winemaker at Houtz for four years. Working at several wineries at once, John also began working for Byron Winery in 1986. 1986 is the year of the first JJ. Kerr Wines crush. Concentrating on Chardonnay, which is the mainstay of JJ.Kerr Wines, John began making reds in 1988 with highly acclaimed Syrah wines. In 1990 Byron became an R.J. Mondovi subsidiary and John took the position of assistant winemaker but continued to nurture his own label JJ Kerr Wines. Expanding from Chardonnay, John began his ground breaking work on Pinot Noir in 1991 in Santa Barbara. In 1995 John went to work for the Firestone family as

  2. Whitehall Lane 2005 Pinot Noir Carneros

    $ 12.98

    This is a solid Pinot Noir from a top-notch Napa Valley winery. Known mostly for their Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, this is a varietal that Whitehall Lane had great success with in the 2005. About the vintage: The 2005 growing season in Carneros started with cool, wet weather, followed by mild summer months. With ample moisture in the soil and warm days, the Pinot Noir ripened slowly and evenly. The grapes were harvested from the Las Brisas Vineyard and the Sangiacomo Vineyard in the middle of September when the fruit displayed ideal balance and juicy, ripe flavors. Tasting note: The 2005 Whitehall Lane Carneros Pinot Noir is beautifully balanced, displaying aromas and flavors of ripe cherry, strawberry, clove and toasty oak. It is supple, clean and smooth on the mid-palate with a savory crème brulee finish. Enjoyable now and for several years to come. This is a solid bottle of Pinot Noir!

  3. 2005 Charles Cimicky Trumps Grenache/Shiraz Barossa Valley

    $ 13.99

    "Bright red. Intensely spicy red berry aromas remind me of high-end New World pinot; this boasts impressive purity and thrust. Exotic baking spices accent fresh strawberry and raspberry fruit, with silky tannins adding gentle support. Sweetness builds on the long, juicy, very precise finish. It's hard to believe that this wine is carrying 15.5% alcohol. The grenache vines used for this bottling are reportedly 80 years old." 90 points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Jul/Aug 07 "An outstanding bargain, the 2005 Grenache/Shiraz Trumps (72% Grenache and 28% Shiraz aged 15 months in old French oak) possesses a deep ruby/purple color, copious fruit, superb purity, and a touch of background wood. It is a full-bodied, powerful, amazingly flavorful wine for the price. Enjoy it over the next 2-3 years." 89 points - Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate, Issue 167 (Oct 2006) "Firm and spicy, with a distinct licorice note running through the dark fruit flavors, lingering nicely against fine tannins. Best from 2008 through 2015. 1,000 cases made." 89 points - Wine Spectator, October 15, 2007 "A blend of 65% Grenache and 35% Shiraz, this is a lush, easy-to-drink wine meant for early consumption. The blend brings stone fruit and cherries, underscored by spice cake and chocolate, with hints of espresso and cola on the finish." 89 points - Wine Enthusiast, November 1, 2007

  4. Cristom 2005 Estate Syrah - 375ml

    $ 16.98

    It perfectly expresses bright Syrah notes of finely milled black pepper, slightly sweet smoked meat and a touch of cocoa, plus lots of smoky berry. A winning style, if surprisingly lean on the palate, more so than the 2004. A bit of decanting brings out richer, ripe red fruit, though it retains the radiant flavors that make Cristom Pinots so delicious. And no fear of weakness here; it hit 14.2 percent alcohol.

  5. Yarra Yering 2005 Pinot Noir

    $ 38.98

    Every once in a while a very special deal comes along, and this is one of them. The Yarra Yering 2005 Pinot Noir is a wine of exceptional quality and complexity. Like many other wineries, the economic climate has slowed sales to a point where top-flight wines are now becoming more readily available at a reduced price. This makes for outstanding deals for the consumer. This is one such wine. In 1969, after nearly fifty years of dormant wine making, Dr. Bailey Carrodus finished a long search in Victoria’s Yarra Valley for the perfect vineyard site, planting 12 hectacres of vines at the foot of the Warramate Hills. With a degree in botany, another in winemaking and a doctorate earned at Oxford for research into plant physiology, combined with a passion for great wine and a fiercely independent mind, Dr. Carrodus began producing some of the most highly acclaimed wines in the area. Produced from what are amongst the oldest Pinot Noir vines in the Yarra Valley, this wine has developed an underground following over its existence that is beginning to be recognized as standing alongside the, historically, more awarded wines from the estate. Deviating from current oenological trend and fashion, the fruit is largely handled in its usual manner, favoring partial crushing and a short cuvaison as integral tools in the preservation and expression of vineyard elements in concert with its startling varietal character. Aristocratic, fragrant, intensely perfumed, voluptuous, sweet strawberry/plum richness, anise, beetroot, silky in texture, richness, round, soft and mouth-filling to the end. James Halladay - 94 Points Deeply coloured; rich, plush and mouth-coating, with deep, sweet, plum fruit which takes you to the edge of dry red, but doesn't go over; very good fruit, oak and tannin balance; heroic pinot. Cork. Stephen Tanzer - 92 Points Deep red. Impressively complex nose combines fresh and dried red berry aromas with fresh meat and forest floor nuances; this could pass for a Gevrey-Chambertin. Concentrated raspberry and blackberry flavors are complicated by bitter amaro and cherry skin notes and sweetened by floral pastille. Firms up on the chewy finish, which features an intriguing mineral quality and excellent persistence. Robert Parker - 91 Points Dark ruby-colored, it exhibits aromas of pain grille, scorched earth, meat, black cherry, and black raspberry. Full-bodied, mouth-filling and ripe, this uniquely-styled Pinot Noir has layers of sweet fruit, 6-8 years of aging potential, and a long finish. It could easily masquerade as a Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru (from a top producer). $ 49.99

    "Deep red. Spicy blueberry and kirsch aromas are brightened by white pepper and minerals. Juicy dark fruit flavors stop short of jammy, with firm tannins adding grip. Sweet vanillin oak spice builds on the long, sappy finish, which features a lingering raspberry note. This could pass for a big New World pinot." 90 points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Sep/Oct 07

  8. Gosset Grande Reserve Brut

    $ 49.99

    "Attractive, burnished gold hue. Fresh bread dough aromas with mixed grains and a hint of sherry. Soft brioche and tropical fruit flavors show a touch of chalkiness. Light toast, fresh acids and lemon zest cap the finish." 93 points - The Wine News, December 2008 "Richly colored in hues of amber and gold, with a toasty, full-bodied nose that offers maturity and depth. This Champagne is totally on the money, with ripe but reserved apple and citrus flavors, and then the slightest bit of mushroom and baked bread on the finish." 92 Points - Wine Enthusiast, December 15, 2005 "Opulent Champagne, this is saturated with ripe fruit, from white peach to white raspberry and lime. It's gloriously heady, yet the acidity keeps it clear and aligned. Old-fashioned rococo elegance." 92 points - Wine & Spirits, December 2008 "Fresh and elegant, revealing a graphite and citrus flavor profile. Shows finesse and a mineral and chalk quality on the back end. Beautifully refined and persistent, with a mouthwatering finish. Drink now through 2012. 41,000 cases made." 91 points - Wine Spectator, November 15, 2008 "The NV Brut Grande Reserve is an incredibly refined wine redolent of ripe pears, flowers and smoke. This mid-weight wine possesses notable elegance, with a long, refreshing finish that lingers on the palate with sweet notes of toasted oak. A fresh, vibrant Champagne, it should continue to develop nicely in bottle for at least a few more years. The Grande Reserve is roughly 46% Chardonnay, 39% Pinot Noir, and 13% Pinot Meunier, with the addition of 12% reserve wine. The cork is labeled C 7470, and this bottle was disgorged in late January, 2008. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2012." 91 Points - Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate, Issue 180, December 2008

  9. 2001 Silvio Grasso Barolo Giachini

    $ 54.99

    "Aromas of blackberries with plums and dried fruits follow through to a full-bodied palate, with chewy tannins and a long, long finish. This is a wonderful single-vineyard wine from Silvio Grasso. Best after 2007. 250 cases made." 92 points - Wine Spectator, October 15, 2005 "Bright red-ruby. Sexy, penetrating, rather pinot-like aromas of cherry, raspberry, mace and nutmeg. Then sweet, broad and firmly built, with cool red fruit and mineral flavors nicely framed by firm acids. In the past, the Corino Giachini bottling has struck me as Musigny-like; in 2001, this example from Grasso offers some of the same Burgundian tang and minerality. Very youthful Barolo, finishing with substantial but fine tannins that call for five or six years of aging." 92(+?) points, Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Nov/Dev 04 "The dark ruby 2001 Barolo Giachini presents a complex nose of spices, menthol and minerals. Round and soft on the palate, it offers plenty of ripe red fruit and toasted oak flavors, with good length and terrific overall balance. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2016." 90 points - Wine Advocate #167 (Oct 2006)
