2005 Chasseur Chardonnay Lorenzo Russian River Valley
$ 54.99"Readers looking for a grand cru Chablis-styled California white should check out the 2005 Chardonnay Lorenzo Vineyard. Sensational notes of lemon, citrus blossoms, wet stones, orange rind, and guava as well as an unmistakable minerality are followed by a wine of great ripeness, purity, and full-bodied power as well as length. Despite the fact that it was aged in nearly two-thirds new French oak, the wood is impossible to discern in the wines aroma and flavor profiles. It should drink well for 3-4 years." 94 points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Issue 174 "Intense and vibrant, with a firm, tight band of green apple and pear flavors that are concentrated and focused, ending with an earthy, minerally edge. Concentrated. Best from 2008 through 2013. 371 cases made." 93 Points - Wine Spectator, December 15, 2007 "Starting with complexing notes of roasted grains and showing a very deep and streamlined fruity note, the nose of this generous yet still developing youngster only partially prepares one for the stunning balance and depth of the wine on the palate. It has all the sweet, juicy fruit expected of the best of its appellation, and it backs it up with the richness of creme brulee and citrus blossom in flavors and aftertaste of amazing length. Withal, it is destined for better things some two years hence and seems likely to hold over twice that time and more." 92 points - Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine, September 2007
2001 Silvio Grasso Barolo Giachini
$ 54.99"Aromas of blackberries with plums and dried fruits follow through to a full-bodied palate, with chewy tannins and a long, long finish. This is a wonderful single-vineyard wine from Silvio Grasso. Best after 2007. 250 cases made." 92 points - Wine Spectator, October 15, 2005 "Bright red-ruby. Sexy, penetrating, rather pinot-like aromas of cherry, raspberry, mace and nutmeg. Then sweet, broad and firmly built, with cool red fruit and mineral flavors nicely framed by firm acids. In the past, the Corino Giachini bottling has struck me as Musigny-like; in 2001, this example from Grasso offers some of the same Burgundian tang and minerality. Very youthful Barolo, finishing with substantial but fine tannins that call for five or six years of aging." 92(+?) points, Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Nov/Dev 04 "The dark ruby 2001 Barolo Giachini presents a complex nose of spices, menthol and minerals. Round and soft on the palate, it offers plenty of ripe red fruit and toasted oak flavors, with good length and terrific overall balance. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2016." 90 points - Wine Advocate #167 (Oct 2006)
2005 Silver Oak Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
$ 58.50The dominant themes for the 2005 harvest were a rare combination of high quality and quantity, and very homogeneous maturity. The 2005 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon beautifully expresses the full aromatic ripeness of this vintage. This blend of wine from several selected vineyards in the appellation, is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. We blended the vineyard lots in early 2006 and transferred the wine to 50% new and 50% once-used American oak barrels for aging. Blending prior to barreling allows us to achieve a balance of the wine’s natural elements, such as fruit and tannin, before they are influenced by oak. The wine was then aged in barrel for approximately 25 months and another 15 months in bottle to harmonize its components before release. It is full bodied and yet refined, and consistent in its color, aroma, palate and finish. 2005 Bodegas Poesia Lujan de Cuyo Mendoza
$ 59.99"The winerys flagship is called Poesia and is a blend of 60% Malbec and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. It too is sourced from an 80 year old vineyard in Lujan de Cuyo. The 2005 Poesia was barrel-fermented and aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak. Opaque purple-colored, it has a high-class aromatic array of pain grille, violets, spice box, black cherry, and blueberry. Smooth-textured, ripe, and sweetly-fruited, this elegant wine is beautifully balanced, nicely concealing enough structure to permit 5-7 years of evolution. It should drink well through 2030. " 93 Points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate #174 (Dec 2007) "The youngest of the Poesia line shows some new oak in the form of sawdust aromas and espresso and mocha on the finish. In between those oak-based characteristics are mineral and black-fruit aromas as well as lush, very potent plum and berry flavors. With midnight darkness, firm tannins and straggling wood notes, we suggest sitting this bruiser down for another two to five years." 92 points - Wine Enthusiast, February 1, 2008
2005 Pascual Toso Finca Pedregal Single Vineyard Mendoza
$ 59.99"Steady as a rock, with smoky, charred aromas mixed with beautiful black fruit scents as well as accents of licorice and earth. For anyone enthralled with New World ripeness, this is the ticket. Its a blend of 70% Malbec and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and it is lush, packed with blackberry and boysenberry flavors, and viscous on the finish. Complete and special at every level." 93 points - Wine Enthusiast, May 1, 2008 "The 2005 Finca Pedregal is 70% Malbec and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from the Pedregal de Barancas Vineyard in the Maipu district of Mendoza. It was aged for 18 months in a mix of French and American oak. It delivers a superb perfume of pain grille, pencil lead, mineral, espresso, black cherry, and blackberry. Complex and elegant on the palate, it has gobs of savory, ripe fruit, excellent integration of oak, tannin, and acidity, and several years of aging potential. It should be at its best from 2012 to 2022." 92 points - Jay Miller for Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate, Issue 180 "This is dark and winy, with layers of fig sauce, ripe plum, shaved vanilla, Turkish coffee and molten chocolate running along dense but fine-grained tannins. The long, exotic finish lets spice, cocoa and dark fruit notes linger. Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2011. 600 cases made." 91 points - Wine Spectator, May 15, 2008
2005 Brancaia Il Blu (Tuscany)
$ 59.99"The flagship 2005 Il Blu, 50% Sangiovese, 45% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, spent 20 months in French oak. Crushed flowers, raspberries and sweet toasted oak waft from the glass as this beautiful wine reveals its feminine personality. The red fruit turns darker on the palate, where leather and spice overtones add further complexity. Although the 2005 doesnt have the sheer opulence of the 2004, it does offer terrific balance in a smaller-scaled style, with well-integrated tannins, notable persistence and commendable balance. This is a very strong effort from Brancaia. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020." 92 points - Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate, Issue 177 "This sleek and jammy blend is 50 percent sangiovese and 45 percent merlot (the remainder is cabernet sauvignon). The fruit feels primary and fresh, a strawberry sweetness that's framed by sandy tannin. Balanced and long, this will match pork ribs fresh off the grill." 91 points - Wine & Spirits, April 2008 "Subtle yet complex aromas of mineral, currant and blackberry. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and a caressing finish. Not a big wine, but balanced and refined. Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best after 2009. 4,100 cases made." 90 points - Wine Spectator, October 31, 2007
2005 Chateau Grand Mayne (Saint-Emilion)
$ 59.99"Classic aromas of blueberries, cedar, vanillin, black currants, and spring flowers jump from the glass of this dense purple-colored St.-Emilion. Broad, rich, jammy fruit flavors compete with the full-bodied, highly-extracted style that exhibits moderate tannin as well as excellent overall harmony and purity. This cuvee tends to be made in a dense, chewy style, and the 2005 may ultimately rival Grand-Maynes brilliant 1998. Anticipated maturity: now-2022. A sleeper of the vintage!" 93 points - The Wine Advocate, Issue 176 (Apr 2008) "Big wood, big fruitthere are no half measures here. The wine is spicy from the tannins and wood, the fruit is densely black with red berry tinges, and the power is evident throughout. This wine has weight." 93 points - Wine Enthusiast, June 1, 2008 "Crushed blackberry aromas, with lots of coffee and toasty oak, lead to a medium-to-full body, with polished, velvety tannins and a vanilla, berry and chocolate aftertaste. Best after 2012. 4,580 cases made." 90 points - Wine Spectator, March 31, 2008
2005 Hartwell Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District Miste Hill
$ 59.99Miste Hill is a wine that shows the softer side of the Hartwell Estate. The grapes come exclusively from Hartwell's hillside estate. During the aging process, a selection of only the barrels that show brightness of fruit, soft tannins, and approachability are selected. The wine is blended, racked, and bottled without fining or filtration. The goal is to create a wine that can be opened and enjoyed immediately upon release. The 2005 Miste Hill wine is rich, but well-balanced, fully ripe but with great varietal definition, and tannins that will help the wine to age for many years to come. Hartwell Estates property is located on a hillside in the Stag's Leap District.Dick Grace shared his Bouche Clone from Grace Family Vineyards, and collaborated with Bob on Hartwell's very first production. In 1990 after 22 months in new French oak barrels, the wine, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, was released with explosive success. This established the tradition of quality and style that continues to distinguish Hartwell wines. In addition to making great wine, Blanca and Bob Hartwell are dedicated to the tradition of charitable giving. Their ongoing philanthropic efforts are instrumental to organizations that improve the lives of children.
2005 Chateau Lagrange (St Julien)
$ 59.99"The tannins dominate this dark, brooding wine. At this stage, it seems to have closed up, leaving the fruit and acidity buried. But with this concentration, the future looks promising. There is a long aging potential here." 94 points - Wine enthusiast, June 1, 2008 "Currant, mineral, plum and light toasty oak follow through to a full body, with ultrasilky tannins and a long, caressing finish. This is thoroughly beautiful. Superbalanced and very pretty. Best after 2011. 24,165 cases made." 93 points - Wine Spectator, March 31, 2008 "Sweet, toasty, oaky notes interwoven with hints of black olives, blackberries, cassis, and spice box are found in this densely saturated ruby/purple-hued 2005. While rich, with impressive concentration and purity, it is also tannic, full-bodied, and painfully backward and foreboding. This is another long-term prospect that will require patience. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2027." 91 points - The Wine Advocate, Issue 176
2005 Chateau Boyd Cantenac (Margaux)
$ 59.99"This chateau, which is often under the radar (production is only 5,500-6,000 cases), has fashioned a terrific, inky/blue/purple-hued 2005 with a beautiful bouquet of spring flowers, creme de cassis, pain grille, and blueberries. Powerful and concentrated with full-bodied richness, stunning purity, and a tannic, 40+-second finish, this beauty requires patience. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2030+." 92 points - The Wine Advocate, Issue 176 "Offers loads of toasty oak and very ripe fruit, with hints of coffee and tobacco. Dark, full-bodied, rich and round, with beautifully textured tannins. Very long and caressing. Best after 2013. 6,000 cases made." 92 points - Wine Spectator, March 31, 2008
"Prapo is the most beautifully formed of the Ceretto 2001s, at least at this early stage of development. It offers intense power and length of flavor on a light frame, without any perceptible alcohol to diminish the freshness and succulence of the bright, berried fruit. Tannins direct the flavors without getting in the way, so the wine feels sleek, a tense line of nebbiolo with the amplitude and depth that will sustain it for 15 to 20 years." 94 points - Wine & Spirits, March 1, 2006 "Showing plenty of Serralunga character, the 2001 Barolo Prapo is massive and backward, revealing flavors of dark ripe fruit with terrific substance on the palate, a strapping, austere frame, and a finish displaying a distinct note of menthol. It is aged in barriques of which 30% are new, 30% one year old, and 40% two years old. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2023." 92 points - Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate, Issue 167 "Bright and floral with plum and prune aromas with hints of fresh herbs. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and a silky finish. Nice and balanced. Just as I remember it from barrel. Best after 2008. 1,080 cases made." 91 points - Wine Spectator, October 15, 2005 "Heady aromas of cranberry, strawberry, red licorice, tobacco, smoke and nutmeg. Very tangy flavors of sweet raspberry, citrus blossom, clove and oak char are crisp and racy. Dried fruit and cedar highlight the bold finish." 92 points - The Wine News, April/May 2006
2005 Ramey Chardonnay Hudson Vineyard (Carneros)
$ 59.99"Ramey's Hudson Vineyard bottling wins top honors among the winery's three new single-site offerings by virtue of its perfect marriage of richness, refinement and balance. It leads with lots of optimally ripened appley fruit while showing a good bit of sweet oak and top-notes of flowers and spice. Always intense, yet never out of control, it is at once both rich and extracted yet also light on its feet. It delivers plenty to like now, but it has the kind of structure and depth that guarantee even better things to come a few years hence." 95 Points - Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine, December 2007 "Offering copious amounts of orange marmalade, smoky hazelnuts, and tropical fruits, the full-bodied, rich 2005 Chardonnay Hudson Vineyard is on a faster evolutionary track than the Hyde Vineyard. Drink the Hudson cuvee over the next 2-3 years." 94 points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate #174 (DEC 2007)
2004 Shirvington Cabernet Sauvignon McLaren Vale
$ 59.99"Ruby-red. Potent aromas of bitter cherry, pepper, licorice and tobacco show excellent varietal accuracy. Tangy and vibrant, with strong cherry and cassis flavors complemented by subtle notes of minerals, cured tobacco and spicy oak. A focused, youthfully restrained cabernet that has the concentration and balance to reward cellaring. Offers impressive potential." 92 points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Jul/Aug 06 "The deep ruby/purple-colored 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits a restrained, elegant bouquet of black fruits, minerals, and toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, with excellent concentration, purity, and texture, it should be consumed over the next 7-10 years. Former winemakers Sarah and Sparky Marquis have left Shirvington and the wine is now being made by Kim Johnston. Little has changed, although the 2004s appear to be more streamlined and delicate than their 2003 and 2002 counterparts." 90 points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate #161 (OCT 2005)
2004 Glaetzer Shiraz Barossa Valley
$ 59.99"The finest of this trio is the flagship cuvee, the 2004 Shiraz produced from 80- to 150-year-old dry farmed vineyards in the northern Ebenezer sector of the Barossa. Aged 16 months in French oak and American hogsheads, this larger-than-life, fascinating wine (cropped at .25 to 1 ton of fruit per acre) offers big, sweet, blackberry and cassis characteristics intermixed with notions of smoke, licorice, and pain grille. A wine of amazing extract, richness, and full-bodied power, with great purity as well as balance, this stunning offering should age effortlessly for 15 or more years. Filled with personality, it is a tour de force in Barossa Shiraz." 94-96 Points, Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate #161 (Oct 2005) "(from vines reportedly between 85 and 115 years of age) Inky ruby. Spicy blackberry, cherry and dark chocolate on the nose, with complicating notes of espresso and dried violet. Cool and restrained, with a suave, silky tone to the dark fruit flavors and gentle acids bringing freshness and energy. Nothing overdone here. There's impressive clarity and length to the blackberry and blackcurrant flavors. Really gorgeous." 93 points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Jul/Aug 06
