2005 Quinta de Roriz Duoro Prazo
$ 7.99"The 2005 Prazo de Roriz is another nice value, even with declining exchange rates. It is round and velvety, but with bite on the finish. It has modest depth, although it is quite acceptable for its second wine status. It seems a bit more backward than the 2004 was at a similar time, yet it evolves fairly quickly with air. It will be tasty and a crowd pleaser, fleshy, but tending to thin fast, and having a bright, crisp, flavorful finish. Drink now-2014." 88 points - Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate, Issue 178 "This is an immediately accessible blend of five of the most highly regarded Douro varieties (tourigas nacional and franca [35 percent each]; tintas barroca, roriz and cão [10 percent each]). The fruit is gentle and ripe, with scents of blueberry and black cherry, the tannins soft, their mineral edge kicked up by acidity. It's structured like a cru Beaujolais grown on schist-a by-the-case buy for casual entertaining." 88 points - Wine & Spirits, April 2007 "Crisp, with pure red plum, mineral and raspberry flavors. Lip-smacking finish of spice, red cherry and maple. Drink now through 2009. 3,000 cases imported." 87 points - Wine Spectator, May 31, 2007
2005 Hogue Merlot Columbia Valley
$ 7.99"Its got a nice, soft entry, with black cherry candy dominating the palate. Theres a slightly burnt, raisiny flavor running through the finish, as if the grapes were a bit roasted, but the tannins are smooth and for the price it drinks well and delivers an extra dollop of intensity. A Best Buy." 86 points - Wine Enthusiast, November 15, 2006
This Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon offers layers of flavor, reflecting its varied terroir. Aromatic violets, tobacco, cocoa and bright red berry character leads into rich, concentrated fruit flavors of raspberries, currants and succulent black cherries. The ripe fruit flavor is juxtaposed with natural acidity for a balanced, well-structured wine with medium tannins and a supple finish.
2005 Graffigna Centenario Cabernet Sauvignon San Juan
$ 9.99"Bright medium ruby. Musky blackberry, cassis and a hint of bitter chocolate on the nose. Suave on entry, then very ripe and sweet in the middle, with crushed fruit flavors just this side of stewy. Finishes with supple, even, building tannins. 87 points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Jan/Feb 08 "Ripe cherry and vanilla aromas with hints of charcoal and pencil shavings. Charred cherry flavors with woody tannins. Sweet, dry finish with cherry fruit echoes." 87 points - The Wine News, April/May 2008
2005 Vampire Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles
$ 9.99This bottle possesses the hallmark characteristic of the Cabernet variety, a wild spicy nose with bell pepper tones that the French call 'Sauvage'. Intensely dark purple in color, this full bodied wine has a rich fruit flavor and complex oak structure.
90RP Deep cherry and cassis aromas complicated by an array of floral, mineral and herbal nuances. Powerful dark fruit flavors are firmed by solid tannins and lifted by gentle minerality. Picks up smoked meat and anise notes on the long, chewy finish. This could be a Bandol. Is the average buyer at this price point ready for this? Another amazing value. 90 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Sep/Oct 07 Certified Organic with USA label approval.
2005 Castle Rock Petite Sirah Russian River Valley
$ 9.99"Good evocation of a cool-climate Petite Sirah, in all its fruity glory. Dry, crisp and dense in tannins, the flavors are of jammy blackberries, tobacco and plums, with a spicy finish. A Best Buy." 87 points - Wine Enthusiast, November 15, 2007
2005 Vampire Merlot Paso Robles
$ 9.99Long before the tales of vampires spread, the Transylvanian people mastered the art of producing wine. Plato proclaimed the vineyards of Transylvania to be the finest in the world. Vampire Merlot has a lively dark purple color. The soft fruit flavors integrate well with the structure of this wine, which marries soft tannins with vanilla hints of fine American oak. It is perfect to enjoy now but has the structure to age. A big wine, Vampire Merlot can take on the biggest char-grilled steaks you can throw at it, but it also has the fine elegance of this classic variety, allowing it to be served at parties with buffet foods and dips.
