Garciarevalo 2005 Casamaro Tinto Rueda

The gutsy 2005 Casamaro Tinto (100% Tempranillo) possesses a dark ruby/purple color as well as notes of pepper, spice, earth, and sweet cherry fruit. The tannins are elegant in this personality-filled, bistro-styled red. There seems to be an identity crisis at many modern Spanish wineries. Character and distinctiveness are being sacrificed for slickness and precious critical accolades. Casamaro Tinto is the antithesis—instead of a heavy, boorish international style, this Rueda wine. It’s a red to serve a little chilled with a young chèvre covered in rosemary. About Garciarevalo: In the heart of Rueda is the family-owned winery of Garciarevalo. If you visit their vineyards you may notice something odd about the ground; the sandy soils scattered with the occasional ancient seashell might make you forget that these vineyards are located in central Spain, at an elevation of 900 meters. These sandy soils provided a natural protection from phylloxera when the pest spread across the region about 100 years ago. Ranging from 100 to 145 years old, many of those vines still grow today.

The initial aromas are clean and intense, with well-matured red berries and enhanced by sweet touches of oak and a little balsamic eucalyptus and liquorice at the end. The taste is balanced and full-flavored, with sweet, round tannins married to light acidity, giving a fresh, harmonic tone to the palate. There is a hint of mint and minerals on the finish, which is also silky and elegant. Jose Maria Garcia and Milagros Figuero are a vine-growing couple who have devoted their entire lives to looking after their "majuelos," or young vines. They are proud heirs to a culture that has been handed down through several generations. Each day is filled with care of more than 45 hectares of vines, over half of which were carefully and meticulously farmed by their ancestors, some of the vines still producing grapes today date back to the 1930s.
